Help! Puppy Names
« on: December 12, 2017, 09:10:38 AM »
We bring home a blue roan boy in four eeeks but are struggling for manes. I know we have plenty of time but I hate referring to him as ‘the puppy’. The only thing we’ve come up with so far is Buddy. Suggestions please!

We nearly called ours Fergus. I still think it's a sweet name for a dog. And then there's Liberace, because he's the peeinist?

Lots of suggestions here:  https://www.about-cocker-spaniels.com/cute-puppy-names-for-boys.html

ooh the list is endless I have Minstrel, Branston and Toby

in the past I have had, Bruno, Jasper, Monty & Smudge

Whatever you choose make sure you will be happy calling him by that name in the garden and out and about (i.e. nothing that is going to amuse others but embarrass you - specially when he goes deaf on you)  :shades:

Remembering Smudge 23/11/2006 - 3/8/2013, and Branston 30/8/14 - 28/10/22 both now at the Bridge.

It needs to be short (no more than two syllables), easy to call and suitable for the environment the dog will be in. On the cute puppy names website I can see some that wouldn't really do. You cannot (for example) call a Yorkshire dog 'Gaylord' unless you want all his doggie mates to laugh at him. Likewise I am not going to be walking through the fields calling 'Lovechild'!

I rather like 'Chimp'

lol thanks. Funnily enough Gaylord wasn’t up there with favourites 😂 so far considering Buddy, Paddy or Bailey.

I also had  Paddy (how could I forget him) a sheltie cross, who went everywhere with me.

If you call him Bailey you will have to find him a mongrel chum. That way they will be 'Mut and Bailey'!

[Motte and Bailey castles? One for the medieval historians there]

It's always so difficult to choose names

I was told a name should end in either ie or a y. But what ever you choose it needs to pass the shouting it in the park test.

To me Bailey will always be a lovely old golden retriever. One of my friends dogs that always put up with Darwin's playful cocker moments without

Other names we have on our list included Hubble, Eddison ( or Eddy) and Newton but we had settled on a science based theme.

Also like Echo, Storm, Shadow

Do not let children choose - you will end up with something silly if they are small or pretentious if they are older ("Socrates", "Euripides") but you will be the one shouting the name across fields or into the garden at night.

We like human sounding names

All ours being with "M": Molly, Murphy, Mason. You might want to think about a theme. Or not.

The name should match the personality; if possible. Decide after you have met the puppy a couple of time.

Personally, I love "Jarvis", but I get overruled by Mrs M

This reminds me of a story recounted in 'The Dalesman' many years ago. The local vicar in a Dales farming parish went to visit a local farmer whose church attendance was not the most regular. He was pleased to find the man seated in front of the fire with a litter of pups playing at his feet and the Bible open in his lap.
'Glad to see you reading the Good Book' said the vicar,
'Nay reverend,' the farmer replied, 'truth to tell, I were looking for some names for t' new pups'!
