Choosing a new puppy food
« on: July 01, 2007, 04:42:38 PM »
Charlie is on JWB and he is doing great, only one problem ... how should I say it ... hmm .... he is a bit windy ;)
also when he goes to number 2, the first  bit is nice and solid ... then it gets sloppier the more there is .. too sloppy at times, if its the morning one, its normaly ok

from what I've read many dogs suffer from wind when they are on JWB, hence the reason to change

localy at the garden centre and at PAH we can get JWB, Hills or then it moves to some of the other brands that have been listed as not so good .. or tested on animals ..... then there are the unknowns to me, like the more general "working dog food" and others such stocked at supermarkets like bakers etc

I cant find burns locally (easily accessable)

any advice on what to choose, give him etc

like I say he is doing great, apart from the trumps ... and the odd runny number 2

Hi Philtrum

Harvey was exactly the same on JWB  :005: so we changed him over to Autarky puppy/junior a couple of days ago( after reading all the great reviews on here). So far he's been fine on it, poos seem ok  Harvey isn't that keen on any dry food though and will only eat it if we mix it with a litte bit of ham/chicken etc. I know you can order it direct from Autarky although I got it from a local pet shop :D

Can't advise you on what to feed, but farting dogs and runny poo would be enough to make me change!  :005:

You'll probably get a lot of different answers on this, but for myself, I do this, and I know from other dog forums I read that a lot of other people do it too. They even call it a rotation diet.

A lot is going to depend on how Charlie handles it

I feed burns and find it very good. I get it delivered direct from burns. If you buy the big bag the delivery charge is free. If you ring them they will send you a free sample.

thanks for the advice / info :)

I've found a small local pet food place that sell all kinds of dog food :)

they have JWB and Burns (adult only in stock), they also have purina beta and where recommending chudleys which is significantly cheaper (hence Im weary).... anyone heard of it ?

also is the purina any good ?

any info is welcomed and would never be taken as a slight against one food / company ... just your experience of using it / knowing someone who used it

Cheers
Phil (off to puppy school now :) )

Chudley's is good, it's a working dog food hence is VAT free. I got some samples at the game fair at the weekend as I'm thinking of changing my lot over to it.

They have a wide variety of foods. A working cocker is no different to a show with regards to food

But don't the working foods come with more protein?  I have to keep Billys protein low

Not necessarily, there are different varieties with different protein levels.

Every dog is different Jan, I have 3 different breeds here. One of my labs is on the same food as my cocker and the other lab is on the same food as my JRT  ;)

This is exactly the same as my 2!!! They have only been fed on JWB for nearly 2 weeks but i dont think i can stand the smell any longer - its gross!!!!!!

Think i'm going to have to change their food - is this ok to do? as like i said they have only been on JWB for 2 weeks!

I aways just dismissed working foods as Billy isn't a working cocker. If I need a change at any time I'll look more closely thanks  :D
