Sorry about this one!!      :(

I have noticed on two occasions that Daisy's rear end has had a very peculiar smell - OH described at as 'something has crawled up there and died'!!!!!

Its not a normal (poo) smell and after a cuddle I could smell it on my clothes. This smell disapeared both times after about an hour.

Is this Daisy's anal glands? Is this normal?

Daisy notices the smell herself too and licks around the area.

I hope this doesn't mean she is going to get a problem, any advice most gratefully received.

Sounds like scent glands, smells pungent not pooey!- pop her to your vets and he will check them for you (you could get him to teach you how to empty them - nose plugs advised!). Some groomers clear glands also.

If it is anything more serious the vet will be able to advise on that.

Yip, would have said anal glands too.  Unfortunately I am one of those weak stomached creatures who could never do my dogs anal gland emptying :(   When Chloe's glands were really bad, it was her mouth I smelt it on, took me a while to realise that was because of the licking    It is a definitely distinct smell and if it is on your clothes then pound to a penny it's her bum.  Worth a trip to the vets though, just to double check :D

Scully often gets blocked anal glands

I got the vet to show me how to empty them properly BUT it is DISGUSTING

I'd rather pick ticks of my cats than do that job!!! The vet now cringes when he sees me coming   and gets the rubber gloves out straightaway!!!

I enquired of everyone about anal glands not so long ago ...

Our Blue Cross vet explained that you can feel them - if you feel at either side  of the anus, they are like marbles if full.

They need to be pinched in and squeezed together to empty one another - if this fails, a finger needs to be placed up the dog's anus to press down on the gland whilst pressure is also put onto it (on each side) from the outside.  Hankies or kitchen towel need to be held in front of the bum as the glands can squirt or discharge quite messily !!

The problem with the glands if they are full is they give the dog that "full up" feeling, which is why they usually scoot around on their bums (we call it doing a "Brian the Snail" (Magic Roundabout??).

We took the family to Brean (near WSM) a couple of years ago, and were walking up the endless beach, when Barley decided to do a "Brian" - she scooted along for ages, and left a lovely snail-like track in the sand - we collapsed when a couple coming the opposite way said, in passing "You can get cream for that, you know" !!!!!

The glands are located at about 8.20 if you take the anus as the middle of the clock ....  You have to push in at both on the outerside quite hard, and then squeeze them together (with some kitchen towel in front) and if this doesn't work, then go for it from either side with one finger inside and the other presssure outside!  It's either that or pay through the nose (!!) to go and get the Vet (or a Nurse) to do it ...

I can appreciate that it's not something that anyone can do ... !!!

If you are contemplating doing this yourself - can I suggest that you get the vet to show you how to do it first before having a go. Get it wrong and it can be very painful for the dog and put them off letting you near their rear end in the future    .

It's a common problem amongst dogs and cats and most vets will show you how to do it - if you can face it that is   :D

Not all vets are money grabbers and some will do this type of thing very cheaply.

Our vet does Indies when required, I wouldn't consider doing it myself, not that im' squeamish of the niff, I would be more bothered about hurting her    IMHO things like that are best left to the professionals :)  (thankfully  )
