3 Generation?
« on: January 04, 2005, 09:59:46 AM »
 When we picked up our new pup,Merlin last week the breedr mentioned that we could breed from him as he has 3 generation. She gave us a certificate with his parents, grandparents and great-grandparents on. He is not KC Registered.
I don't want to go in to breeding, but i'd like to know what it means.

What your breeder gave you was a 3 generation pedigree certificate(ie names of parents, grandparents and great grandparents). This is a normal thing to get when buying a pedigree puppy. But that alone doesn't make him suitable for breeding - at the end of the day, a pedigree certificate is just a record of your pups ancestry. Your pup could have an excellent pedigree but still might not be suitable for breeding, due to temperament being affected by lack of socialisation etc. And the fact Merlin isn't KC registered means you shouldn't even think of breeding from him. He would be unable to have the relevant health tests required for the breed which are eye testing and hip scoring. When you go into breeding, you want to better the breed and would need to use very good examples of the breed in order to do that - no reputable bitch owner would choose an unregistered dog over one who has proven himself in the ring. Also no pups that Merlin sires would be eligible for registration from the Kennel Club as it requires both parents to be registered.

Anyway, my advice to you would be to please ignore what your breeder told you   and enjoy Merlin as the much loved pet he was destined to be  :D

I agree totally with Gill & would also add that as your puppy isn't registered, his pedigree could unfortunately be entirely fictional as you have no way of finding out whether it is accurate or not. Whilst KC registration isn't a 100% guarantee that a pedigree is accurate, it's the nearest thing to a guarantee any puppy buyer has at the moment.

Mind you, I'm sure I have met Mary at Crufts, and I don't recall that she looked anything like she does now!!  Can you sing as well, Mary??  If not, can we just read the tattoos???!!!!!!!!!
