lamb leg bone safe to eat?
« on: May 31, 2011, 09:42:43 PM »
I cooked a small leg of lamb and there's a nice (smallish) bit of bone in the fridge with some pink meat adhering. I know Fraser would love it, but is it safe to give a cooked bone to him? It still has marrow inside and the roast was cooked to rare. I read somewhere that cooked bone is brittle and not good for chewing, but this one as I say was in the middle of a pink rare roast and maybe isn't as brittle? Want to be safe in what I give him to chew.

I would not give a dog a cooked bone as they splinter better to be on the safe side than the sorry side  ;)

Only raw bones should be given, any cooking will "dry" the bone and make it brittle.  Even if the meat was rare I wouldn't chance it.

No, it is not safe to feed cooked bones as cooking makes them brittle and likely to splinter.  :-\

I wouldn't risk it - I would only ever give raw bones  ;)

Better get an extra chop for Fraser next time  :shades: :005:

Okay, no cooked bone for the pup. Thanks for your warning. Maybe I'll try to shave off the meat and scoop out the marrow. At least he'll get a little treat.
