Stupid Cocker owners
« on: January 07, 2014, 05:08:14 PM »
On Tynemouth beach today came across a youngish couple with a lovely black Working Cocker aged 6 months, exchanged pleasentries as you do, how old yours etc, they explained it was their first dog and the usual problems we have as owners, then they said something that just astounded me, the conversation went something like this.

Couple: Oh we're going to breed her
Me: Have you bred before (already knowing that it was their first dog)
Couple: No
Me: Well there's a lot more into breeding Cockers or any other dog for that matter
Couple: We'll how hard can it be?
Me: Quite hard I imagine, it takes a lot of time and effort
Couple: Oh we've read a bit (notice 'bit') on the net, it seems dead easy
Me: We'll I think your being very irresponsible, you have very little experience in owning a dog never mind breeding one
Couple: Nonsense, it's dead easy, besides you can make a shit load of money

With that, I just walked away shaking my head.

No such thing as a bad dog, only bad owners.

Unfortunately that's such a common view. People like that make me unbelievably angry >:D

Unfortunately I bought Murphy from a breeder who didn't have a clue. Hence me ending up with a puppy who is at least 50% worker (according to the trainer he went to last week and groomer today could well me all worker) rather than the show puppy advertised.

Clueless  >:(

Sadly that is the common belief at the moment - they think it's easy money.

Must be people on that part of the coast lol. I met a snobby couple at Seaton sluice who told me that MY DOG is a working cocker cos he's short (height). He's actually the taller end of the breed standard AND was bigger than their fully grown show puppy.

I take that as a compliment, I am not known for my tactfulness most times.

Probably a makem (as he opens a can of worms)

Tell them to contact me, I have a 17 day old litter and so far has cost me £1470 without including the cost of food for mum.  All pups are reserved, so definitely not advertising.  This is before worming, feeding the litter, KC registering and micro chipping

Well done for speaking out. Maybe it will make them reconsider once they've had time to digest your words!

My daughter's friend has a mini schnauzer.  The family are thinking it would be such a good idea to let him 'marry' his girlfriend (who's a collie  :o) as the dogs get on so well together and it would be such 'fun' to have a litter of puppies  >:D >:D
Unfortunately nothing you can say can deter people like this  >:D >:D

Well done for speaking your mind. I've done the same so many times, people just haven't a clue what's involved in having a litter if it's done correctly and for the right reasons.

I was once asked by a complete stranger if I could phone their friend who was looking for a nice cocker to go with her dog because she'd been told to let her have a litter before they had her done
They thought mine looked a nice colour   :o

Couldn't believe they were actually serious. Tried to explain all the reasons why they're friend shouldn't breed from her dog and they just said, " oh forget it " and walked off.
