Working or Show?
« on: July 15, 2006, 10:16:55 AM »
Sorry to be so dim  ph34r !  But it's probably such an obvious question that I can't seem to find the answer.

What are working cockers and show cockers?  Daisy doesn't do any work or go to shows, just chews a lot, maybe she's a chew cocker  :005: ?

It refers to the type of cocker that they are. There are working type and show type - if you do a search on the forum you will find lots of posts on the subject which will detail the differences between the two ;)

;)  Ellie  This is an edited copy of a post from Penel a couple of years ago which may help? Haven't got the pics though. If someone could post some pics it would help I think ?

From Penel
''I have one of each - a show type cocker, and a working type -
This is Tilly - she is an undocked orange and white show type cocker. Very long, low set ears, more feathering, domed head, generally - dare I say it - they are "prettier"...

This is Hattie - she is an undocked liver and white working type cocker.  Higher set ears, squarer flatter head, far far less feathering, more muscular body, often shorter legs and longer body - far more "business like "     Working cockers do differ tremendously in looks though, some look a lot more like the show type than my Hattie does !

Just wondered if this would give you some idea, Flo is a black and white show cocker and her friend Lily a working cocker type ;)

Thank you Jann.  Photos did help.  Daisy is rather dainty and feathery with a domed head and long ears and looks more like Penel's Tilly than Hattie so she must be show type.  Thank goodness COL members are kind enough to help us learners along!  :D

Thanks Jean, I think that link has confirmed it for me.  Wonder what Irish Water Spaniels? I like the look of them.

Jann, my camera is rubbish, bought it on the spur of the moment on holiday.  But there's a photo of Daisy, on the introductions thread, Hello from Ellie and Daisy,  posted at the end of April this year.  Though she's had a couple of growing spurts since then.  I'll see what I can do with the camera this evening. Thanks again.

ellie, you should be able to tell from her 5 gen pedigree - if there are sh ch listed you have a show type, and if you see ft ch that's field trial champion and that signifies working cocker heritage

she may be a bit of both, nothing wrong with that  ;) :luv:

Daisy and I feel much better for knowing exactly what she is!  Thanks.

Jann, Daisy's blushing!  I think she's beautiful too, but then I am a bit biased...

Will get the camera out and force it to work and post some more of her soon.  Mary's photos of Clive and Lottie are inspiring.

Sorry hope you don't mind me asking about the above quote my Lottie has sh ch several times in her 5 gen pedigree and only one ft ch, I can tell just by looking at her that she has defintely got working cocker in her because of her ears, she is quite a delicate dog though and has beautiful orange roan markings and I think her face is more show type, I tend to tell people that she is a working cocker because of her ears but would appreciate your experienced views, is she a worker a show or a bit of both - help, some people have even asked me if she is a sprocker?
Love me, love my dogs
