whats the oldest your/a cocker has lived to?
« on: September 23, 2006, 07:51:55 PM »
my old cocker rags was about 15 and pts due to ill heath. I dont personally know any who have lived past 16 in relatively good health.  I have no experience of show type cockers they may live longer. I just wondered as humans are living longer due to improved medical care, are our animals?

My Brook was PTS 9 days before his 12th birthday :'( I think the average life span for a cocker is 12 but I keep hearing about ones who are 15/16 years old and can't help feeling robbed of a few more years with my special boy :luv:
Dallas ( 10) & Disney ( 9 )

Playing at the Bridge: Brook (13/06/04), Jackson (23/12/05) & Vegas (14/07/10)

Its horrible having to make that final choice for your pet, but I truly believe that it is the final act of kindness we can give them as the alternative is just more suffering. but I think all owners feel guilty no matter how ill their pet its having to make the decision thats hard.

The oldest we have had was Jenny who was just a few days short of her 16th birthday when she sadly had to be PTS. Since then we've had several who were between 13 and 15 (and one special girl who was only 11) Our current "golden oldie", Zoe, is coming up to 14 and still going strong - can't remember the last time she went to the vet (touch wood!). I do know of several Cockers who made it to 17 but they seem to be the exception not the rule.

our oldest was amber ( orange/white ) and she was born on the 25/12/1987 and she died on the 27/7/2006 so she was 18yrs & 7mths when she died.
she was in good help other than her eyesight, she just passed away from old age.

Barney, our last Cocker (show type) was pts 2 months after his 15th birthday.  Our vet said he had the heart of an ox, but unfortunately he was senile and was pts when he hadn't got up for 24 hours, or eaten/drunk anything for 12.   :'(

I had to have Badger (worker) PTS at 13 years 10 months as he had severe arthritis and also went slightly senile. He sat in his bed one day and just howled, I knew then that he had had enough.
Raisen was PTS at 12 and Murphy at 9½

(We had a Jack Russell that lived to 21)

Nearly 12 is the oldest for us  :'( Unfortunately we have had a few dogs with probs as they got older including one with a brain tumour that was affecting her behaviour and one who had a series of mini stokes  :'(
