Hi Folks :) .
My girl is going back to the breeder to have her second and final litter very soon, and the breeder has offered me a loan dog while she is away. I have the choice of an older bitch or a young (15 months) old intact boy. I would love to take the boy as he has never left the breeders yard and it would do him the world of good to get out and socialise and have a bit of one on one training and attention.
Question is, how would he go with my boy who is desexed, 3 years old, and very much the top dog and Mummy's special boy?

Thanks in anticipation.

hi,,i don,t think i could do it,firstly your dog may become jealous and the other dog may be distressed,i think my reply would be,,i wouldn,t have a dog on loan,, thats just me though,i couldn,t let it go again.this is a tricky question,,good luck whichever way you go,,x

If your dog is neutered Toohey, it should be ok (I'm assuming he gets on well with male dogs usually?) If he does get jealous of other dogs, then it might be a problem but you know your boy better than anyone  If you go ahead, introduce them on neutral territory first before taking the new dog into your house.

I think if your dog is pretty well socialized then he'll welcome the boy talk for a change! Ruby is well and truly top dog in our house (and outside the house if she can be) and she quite happily allows other bitches to come in and practically take over in a matter of fact sort of way.

Thanks for the replies. I guess it is a matter of seeing how they go. My boy can be very jealous especially if strange dogs come onto his turf, but is fine, and more than happy to play with other males at the park.
We will be meeting him at the breeder's house first, so they can get to know each other there before I bring them home.
I am just a bit concerned about whether this new boy will be quite dominant, considering he is not desexed, in which case there may be problems. But, on the other hand, the new boy has been raised with lots of other dogs, including his Mum, so he would be way down the in the pack order.
Tough to know how they will go, I think.

Ruby is also dominant (inside and outside the house) but is more than happy to allow other bitches to come in the house and take over and dominate her without putting a hair out of place.

I think we often worry what could and might not happen yet they will always surprise us. Also it is often we humans that confuse the issue and accidentally affect the status of the dogs and thus make the dogs unhappy in their new confused status!

Even if the other dog is more dominant it doesn't mean they will fight as your boy may just accept it as his new position for a while (and being dominated doesn't necessarily mean the dog is unhappy).
