Met another cocker yesterday
« on: March 10, 2004, 12:34:38 AM »
Unfortunately it wasn't a nice experience  :(  Beautiful black cocker boy, I've never seen him before but apparently his owners live a few streets away. His owner came rushing over to us to see Toby and my five year old daughter asked her if she could stroke her dog. The woman said yes it was fine, but when my daughter stroked him he growled and tried to bite her, if she hadn't moved her hand away quickly I think he would have bitten. He then tried to attack Toby too  :( . Toby was just confused and shrank behind my legs and we carried on walking. The owner didn't even apologise or say anything about it to us, which I found a little rude.

We went off over the field and Toby and Millie were chasing each other when I saw two Cairn Terriers on leads with their owner. I called Toby and Millie back, but they ignored me completely once they had seen the other dogs (Millie is ignorant, I'm hoping Toby will improve as I've managed to coax him back with treats and praise before). The woman shouted "Don't worry, they're okay!"
Apparently her idea of okay wasn't the same as mine as they both attacked Toby  :(

Poor Toby was in a very subdued mood by the time I got him on the lead so I took them straight home. I called up my mum and asked her to bring her dog over to see us, hoping it would make Toby feel a bit more secure that not all dogs want to eat him, but he was very snappy with my mum's dog and lay on his bed with his toys, guarding them if Thor so much as walked within a foot of him.

I'm quite worried that the experiences with non-friendly dogs in our area will make him resent other dogs, but at the same time I can't avoid other dogs as this could have the same effect.
I just wish people would be more honest about their dogs and their temperaments while out on walks  :(

aww padfoot seems like youv had a bad exsp with toby just look at the owners reaction thats why the cocker boys like that , unfortunaly some people dont know how to train dogs :( the whole thing will probably get you out in your garden ( even in the cold   ) to do alot of training with poor little toby :) even where you find theres nasty or bad mannerd dogs you can make sure yours isent like theres :)

I know that on many forums they teach the ignore the dog routien ,we once tried it with a collie boy called glen , and he did what he wanted! till i started the no method

now i treat the dog like a kid and i have always had lovely dogs bar the rage case long as the dog knows your the boss and its not right to bite people then he knows where he stands :)

If you can teach toby the word no , he will understand whats ok and whats not very quickly.

My nextdoor neighbour has a  terrier , she did the ignore taining , and at 2 years old it was still weeing in the house , dispite cleaning it up straight away . it was agressive with other dogs and it runs away.
I said id train it for her so off i went over every few days when she was at work . yes i trained it to stop weeing  and to stop being nasty to other dogs with the simple no! .shes stuck on the running away and it takes hours to get her back . with the help of one of my cats   but it shows me that the method is just as good as any ;) she went away and left the dog with a kennel who trains dogs and she got him back as good as gold they used a simulare method . it still runs away though!

as for the attacks id report them its not on !you should have the right to walk in peace , its about time owners who have agressive dogs were made to go to training lessons , i always say next time it could be a kid

Poor Toby and poor you!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went through exactly the same with Blue after he was attacked, he went from having no confidence at all to being quite aggresive :(

Maybe because Toby's feeling a little threatened at the moment it would be better if the next time that you invite your mum's dog over, you meet in the park first and let them socialise there for a while before taking them both to your house  :D

Blue growled at his friend Nell :(  and it was so out of character for him, Ive become alot more aware of Blues feelings now and if i ever see Blue looking nervous, i will tell in my "silly but confident voice" to go play and he seems to understand that it's ok. I hope this helps to know that Blue is back to himself now, as I'm sure given time Toby will be too

Ive also found that since teaching Blue to retrieve his ball which he really loves :D  this has helped with his recall, not only will he come back when called(well 8 times out of 10  ) but I've found that he would much rather chase his ball than another dog, he thinks it's so much more fun

Good luck with Toby, I hope he's feeling better soon.

(((hugs for you both)))

Well, I had to look after my mum's dog all day today while she went to a funeral in Eastbourne, and I'm pleased to say that he and Toby played all day  :D
Toby started off a little growly about toys and food but by the end of the day he was eating from the same bowl as Thor and allowed him to pick up his bone and walk off with it. I also took them for a walk (with Millie) and we met a very friendly black lab who had a good bounce around with them, so hopefully Toby is feeling better about other dogs now.
I will be dogsitting for my mum quite often as she does irregular hours and doesn't like leaving Thor for too long, she is about to get him a friend from the Mayhew Centre in London so I will have four dogs twice a week soon, but I think it will be really good for Toby. Thor is the same age as him and so is the new dog my mum is picking up soon (who is a bitch) so he will have some puppy company. Millie isn't that playful and i think he really appreciated someone to play with today  :D

Just seen this, Kelly.  Glad to hear that Toby hasn't been too badly affected by his experience.  I can symathise as it's only a couple of weeks since we had a similar incident.  Glad you're both okay  :D
