Title: Tick Removal
Post by: EdinburghG on April 08, 2017, 10:23:21 PM
Hi everybody , I was looking for some opinions /advice on tick removal . I haven't found any on Colby yet but what with the weather getting better I guess it's only a matter of time as he spends most of his time buried in the undergrowth [emoji3]. Also are there any areas of his body they are more likely to head for? Thanks

Yes, its that time of year again - already removed 3 so far!!
There are various gadgets for removing ticks, - I have a pair of plastic tick tweezers, they're probably about 30 years old now but still do the job!! They can bite anywhere but main places are head, ears, chest and under the legs (armpits! ;) ) .
MAin thing is to tease them out gently making sure you get the head out and then desinfect the spot. Make sure you really kill the tick - crush them or whatever but they have skins like leather and its not always enough just to squash them, - I've washed them down the sink or thrown them in the loo only to find them crawling out again (honestly!)
Ticks are going to have to be pretty athletic though if they want to catch Colby on that trampoline!  :005:

Thanks lizzy I had a look on Ebay and saw the tool your talking about , I was watching a video on you tube on the subject where the guy circled the tick with his finger till it fell out but I don't think Colby would sit still long enough for that , the way he dealt with the tick once removed was quite clever though he had a piece of sellotape ready before he started then folded it over the tick crushing it while he did , doesn't seem so much like overkill now I read your post about them returning from the toilet[emoji3], your right though they would need to be jet propelled to catch him on the trampoline!

Have a read of this thread - it will tell you all you need to know  ;)

An O'Tom is the best tool for the job and much better than tweezers as they can result in the head being left in the dog with the risk of infection or transfer of diseases  >:D

O'toms are the best! But any tool that does not squeeze the tick will do.  And of course if you live in areas with many ticks, prevention is important. Talk to your vet about it to get the best option. I couldn't get through the summer without o'tom and exspot where I live :)

Yup, I agree, get the O'Tom. I got mine from the vets for about £1.50. They (you get 2 sizes) never fail. Brilliant little gadget.

Another O'Tom Tick Remover user here. I was dead chuffed to buy purple ones off Amazon, purple is my favourite colour.

Yep, the Otom tool also is best, have tried tick tweezers, but this little gadget is magic. Scotland is i vested with the blighter, we removed very day last year. You'll find the head is the place they attach mostly, as the dog sniffs through undergrowth, though sometimes you will get them on legs and undercarriage.   Vile creatures  :020:

Lots of ticks around here too, although this year is less bad than recent ones.

A few years ago,  on first cross country walk of the year,  poor old betty was infested with more than 30 of the horrible things.  Only three attached,  and they took some finding as they were so tiny.

We use the plastic two jawed ballpoint pen like contraptions.  Sometimes a bit of a fiddle to get under the tick's body without catching the dogs fur too,  but other than that they work fine.

I'm in the New Forest, where we have our fair share of ticks, and I use an O'Tom tick remover.

I don't use any tick or flea preventative on my dogs, so I check them after walks and remove any that I find before they attach. Any that I miss at that stage are spotted when I groom the dogs, which I do every couple of days, or just when they're settled on the sofa with me of an evening and I'm making a fuss of them and find one. That's when the O'Tom comes into action.

William is a largely white orange roan, so it's a lot easier spotting them on him than on blue roan and tan Louis.

Have only had three in total which is strange considering were we have been and the cover she has been in. Her coat is very short maybe that helps. As Elaine says we check her daily whilst grooming or when she is taking over the sofa 😊
I have a removal tool no idea what make, its a thin wire thing that has worked a treat on those three occasions.

O'Tom remover here too. After going to Scotland last year I got quite proficient at removing them - a good five a day off each of them.  >:D
I'm not good at spotting them as they are blue roan so difficult to spot!
However you dispose of them just make sure the blood doesn't spurt anywhere as that carries the diseases.
