Title: Is this normal after spaying???? **** UPDATED ****
Post by: Jeanette on August 24, 2008, 08:27:05 AM
I know Mooks posted to say Annie had to go back to the vets after spaying but the vet said it was down to a bug, I've done a search and can't find my answer so any advice would be appreciated.

Indie was spayed on Friday and yesterday seemed to be better - couldn't stop her runnng around.   This morning, have gone into the kitchen to find diarhoeaa everywhere mixed with blood and a very subdued Indie resting in her bed.    Is diarrhoea normal after being spayed and also should I be worried about the blood - its only a small amount    Haven't seen that anyone else has posted about this.

I know I'm a worrier so please forgive me if you think I'm worrying over nothing.

Doesn't seem to be anyone about at the moment, will log off now and come back in an hour.

Honey certainly didn't have any runny tummy after her spay.... it does sound rather like she has picked up a bug to me...  :-\
What has she been eating?? Might anything have upset her tummy?
Is she drinking, or does she seem dehydrated??

If you're at all worried, I'd contact your vet...

My 2 girls never suffered anything like this either. I'd ring your vet for advice.

neither of mine two girls who both been spayed, had had this after a spay, could be a bug she's picked up.
i would phone vets for advise.

Thanks, I'd rung the vets after Karma's post.   He said she shouldn't have blood in the diarrhoea especially as the diarrhoea was virtually black, asked me to check her gums and told him they were really pale and he wants to see her now.   Am meeting him at the surgery in half hour.   Thought she was recovering so well yesterday  :'(   Will let you know how we get on.

I hope she's ok after seeing the vet.  She sounds a little anaemic (sp?) if her gums are pale, which might be to do with the shock of the op perhaps?

Do let us know how she is when you get back from the vets.

Sending Indie (and you) nice thoughts  :luv:

Been to the vets, he's not sure what is the problem but thinks it could be a reaction to the Metacam but he's not really sure.   He said if was definitely not normal and shouldn't happen after a spay (wanted to add that to anyone else who may be having their dogs spayed soon).   Hoping that's all it is, she cannot take the Metacam anymore and so I asked for other pain relief but he said if that was what the problem is then she would react to them all like that.   Not good news if she needs an operation in future   He's given her some paste to try and bulk the poos (liquid) up but she has still got diarrhoea, if she gets worse or starts being sick then to contact him again.   She's not moving again and keeps crying but don't know whether its from the spay or whether its the secondary problem now.   Don't really know what to say as still not sure whether the problem is down to the Metacam - I'm hoping it is so that she can start to feel better when its out of her system but at the moment there is no change.   Feel like its my fault  :'(

millie had bad diarrhea two days after having a lump removed, the vet said it was probably a reaction to the anesthetic.  Maybe the straining has made her operation site sore as well :-\.

Hope she makes a speedy recovery  :-*

Thanks Jo, wish I was out today, the staying in is driving me mad let alone how fed up Indie will be.  I'm sure she will be OK.  She seems a little better and have given her some scrambled egg - hope it doesn't go straight through her.   I wonder if it is the anaesthetic and not the painkillers - seems horrible to stop the painkillers if thats not what the problem is - the vet never even mentioned the anaesthetic.

Poor Indie will probably feel sore tomorrow when this morning's Metacam wears off and she was supposed to have another 3 days worth of them.

Indie sends a sleepy kiss right back at Rosie.     :-*

If its any help to put your mind at rest - I know several dogs who have reacted in this way to Metacam, I believe it has asprin in it and this can affect some dogs.  I find Norocarp much better as an anti inflam.
My bitch also had runny/mucus poohs for a few days after spaying.

Hope shes better soon.

Thanks all, it means a lot.   Have just left her at the vets, she'll be in a minimum of 2 days on fluid therapy as seriously dehydrated - at least she is in good hands.   I felt helpless watching her get worse, she was vomiting at 5.00 am and blood coming from the rear end. and she couldn't move from her bed as she's exhausted.    :'(

Hoping in few days, I can post that she is well and home.   :luv:

Oh Jeanette, my heart goes out to you. It was exactly a year ago that Heidi took ill like that. Your little pet is in the best place now though. And I think it's perhaps better for you as well, as I'm sure you weren't able to tear yourself away from looking at her before you left her to the vets. At least this way you might be able to rest up a bit.

Thanks, was so worried about this op and was not expecting her to be this ill.   :'(  I know she's in the best place and they will take care of her, wish it was a normal working day so the staff were there all the time instead of just popping in to see her.   I don't think I'll relax until she is home, safe and sound.   May just have to do some housework to keep busy  :o

Sorry to hear she is back in again, at least they can get help to her much quicker than if she was at home, should she need it ,hopefully not  :D and she will be home soon

No one would expect there to be anything wrong after a spay, after all it's a routine operation for most vets that they carry out week after week. Remy had a small bloody discharge after hers and we put it down to her being done so close to having her last litter, and also hers was internally not in her poo. We later found out this was not strictly accurate.

Just rang the vets and she is doing really well, she's eaten something and is hydrated, they have had to take the drip out of her because she is twirling round and round in the crate and getting tangled up  ::)  She hasn't been sick and hasn't passed anything yet so they want to keep an eye on her for the rest of the day until she passes her food and if it isn't bloody then she can come home.    The vet said she is wagging her tail and is pleased to see them this morning.  YAY, never felt so relieved in all my life, didn't sleep a wink last night.

Thank you all for your positive thoughts - it sounds like she will be home this evening, just got to wait for a call from the vets around 4.00pm to let me know that she is not passing anymore blood.

Hi Jeanette have been offline so didn't see this. So sorry you went through this..as you know we went through this with Annie, it was so distressing and she had to go in to vets :'(. I truly believe it was a reaction to metacam. She is now fine and Im having more problems getting her to stay calm !!! However I much prefer this than when she went down hill as its was so awful. But she's great now poo's took a couple of days to firm ph34r just to reassure you x

How is little Indy this morning Jeanette

Indie seems fine - she hadn't gone for a number two whilst she was at the vets at all but they released her as she had perked up loads.   She promptly did a poo in the garden when she got home and was disappointed to see blood in the poo still   Hoping its just the last of it though - it was a different vet who was looking after her from the emergency one on Sunday and she thinks Indie was ill due to a bug whereas the other vet thought it was a reaction to metacam.   Apparently lots of dogs have been brought in with the same symptoms which is why the latest vet thinks its the same bug, she did say the name but I can't remember it.   She's on a course of tablets for 8 days and then I have to take a stool sample in for them to check for this particular type of bacteria.

When I picked her up from the vets, a puppy walked in and she wanted to play so definitely back to the old Indie.   She has been running round the garden chasing the cat over the fence  >:( and so am trying to stop her jumping up.   I'd rather have it this way though then it being so ill.

No diarrhoea or sickness since she's been home, she stinks of doggies though  :shades: but can't bath her as cannot get the wound wet - it must be the smell from the kennels at the vets as other dogs were in there.   One thing though, I am so glad that Indie is crate trained and she still uses her crate at home as can imagine if she wasn't, she would have been very scared and anxious being left in the crate at the vets.   She's never been kenneled before.

Whatever was wrong with her, its not the spay wound to all who have read this and this is healing very nicely as long as I can keep her from biting the wound.   >:(

So glad she's home and roll on next week when she has her stiches out.   :D

Oh, I have just read all of this thread, poor you and poor Indie. I am sorry I missed all the drama, but so pleased she is recovering well now.
