Title: Wilf and Ruby update re glaucoma
Post by: PennyB on September 26, 2008, 07:00:40 PM
Well took both up today to leominster --- Ruby for a check up and Wilf for a gonioscopy. Wilf failed his gonioscopy but vet said regardless of that he would be fine though (he has an increased angle but other factors mean he will be OK) just not good enough for breeding (which as he's neutered is an unlikely thought anyway :005:)

So he doesn't need any treatment.

The vet I saw again is so lovely --- when I was paying the bill he suggested he'd give me a lift to the station rather than me getting a taxi (its about 3-4 miles away) even though he was consulting later in the afternoon so he wasn't exactly going that way. Also only Ruby had the appointment today and he said last friday night when he rang me I could bring Wilf along as he'd squeeze him in somehow.

Ruby is still the same really so he's suggested I remove her eye soon at my own vets and then see him again in 3 months

I'm glad the news is good for Wilf - and at least you now know where you stand with Ruby; which must be a weight off your mind  :-*

The vet sounds wonderful; I might move, as I've never met vets as nice as the ones you go and see  ;)

Your vet sounds great - must be a big help to have someone so caring  ;)

Glad Wilf doesn't need any treatment - one less thing to worry about.  Poor Ruby, but as has been said at least you know the score and can try get your head round it now - I am sure she will adapt brilliantly once the op is over.  :-\

That at least is a weight off your mind now you know Wilf is ok.
I'm sure Ruby will cope very well after her op and will no doubt be a lot happier once it is all over.

So pleased that the news for Wilf is good.  When Ruby has had the op at least the pain should go, and given time she will adapt I'm sure, but it must be upsetting for you all having to come to terms with such a big decision.  Am sending all of you lots of hugs and good wishes especially for your brave girl Ruby, love Heather xxx

As you know Penny, Tia had a horrid painful eye when I got her at almost 8 years old.  :'( We did our best for the eye, but it was too damaged, and had to go.

Tia immediately became a happy dog, and we thought she was pretty happy before. She's never looked back (sorry for the pun!). Her coat became glossy, she started to run and play, and still copes perfectly without the eye.

I don't really notice to be honest, as of course she always looks at me with her remaining eye, and so that's the side of her face I always see. As dogs live in the here and now, and don't spend loads of time at the mirror, I don't suppose Tia realises she ever had two eyes!! ::)

I know she'll be fine but she's my little girl who I've had since she was 8 weeks and she's so lovely --- one woman yesterday pulled a funny face when she saw her eye which upset me

Once the op's over, and it's all healed, you'll be surprised at the number of people who remark "I didn't realise she only has one eye". Ruby is a sparky little thing, and she'll adapt in no time, and will be just as lovely as she ever was!! :-* :-*

Sorry too hear youve got to have Rubys eye removed, but I can truthly say she will be alot happier, our Hollie managed with out her eyes for 5 yrs, we sadly lost her this yr at 15yrs old, All our dogs our eye tested know, as I wouldnt want anyone too go through what we did.

Post by: Emmylou on September 27, 2008, 11:08:18 PM
Glad to hear Wilf is ok.  I know it's a horrible thing to have to face with Ruby, but she won't be in pain once it's removed and I'm sure she'll be much happier and better in herself.  It's worth talking to your vet about the different options for eye removal, I think you can leave the socket open and insert a false eye if you wanted.

I know how horrible it can be when people pull faces or make comments - we had so many people coming up to us when Boo's eye was bad.  Try to ignore them, they're not worth it.  And if that doesn't help, just tell them to p**s off!!!!

As for the vet, he sounds great.  It may be something to do with eye specialists - the one we saw was lovely and even said how great cocker spaniels were!!

Totally agree with the p**s off - you have a great vet and an even greater little girl - remember that spanny motto, cup always half full NEVER half empty.  May Boo make a brilliant recovery - their spirits are indomnitable (sp!!!) so I'm sure she'll be right as rain in no time.  Many, many squidges for her and great to hear Wilf is OK.  All our thougths are with you.  Lots of  :luv: :luv:

Well Ruby's feeling very sorry for herself now --- she had her eye removed at lunchtime. Steve said it didn't bleed much as he was concerned about this aspect of the op but as he said I have a crate so easy to keep her quiet in that or he may have had to keep her in overnight. Her head looks like its got a chunk missing from it and thankfully becuase it didn't bleed much it hasn't swollen much yet.

I didn't realise that she was having the op so soon.  Poor little thing, i'm glad it went well and hope she's feeling better soon.

It made sense really as the eye was defunct and she was in pain (and it was silly buying medication at £48 a bottle when all it was doing was stopping it getting worse) as we were only delaying the inevitable plus better as an elective procedure with my own vet than as an emergency with vets I don't know at the emergency clinic here.

Oh, I agree completely.  Def the right decision, I just didn't realise she was booked in for the op.  As I say, I hope she's better soon and you should be feeling less stressed now that you no she's no longer in pain.

Oh Penny, I am so sorry. I hadn't realised she was having her op today.

I am sure that once she is over it all, and you have got used to the new Ruby, you will be pleased that you went ahead with it when you did. But I am still sorry it had to be.

She is at least going to be free of the pain now. And I guess she may have had some distorted vision for a while. That must have been very confusing for her.

Give her a little squidge from us.

I don't think she'd be in much pain at the mo - the whimpering etc will be GA wearing off.  I hope she'll be feeling better in the morning.

I know this is for the best, and she will cope brilliantly as she is feisty and strong, but I also know how dreadful I would feel if this were to happen to Jarv - so sending many hugs and strong thoughts to you both.

She will feel so much better in a few days and will be as beautiful as ever I'm sure  :luv: :luv: :luv:

Hope Ruby makes a speedy recovery from her op, Penny. I'm sure she will be back to normal very quickly - she's a tough little girl ;) We had a Fox Terrier when I was growing up who had his eye removed (due to injury) and you'd never know it from his behaviour afterwards - dogs are amazing for just accepting what is and getting on with things :D

I assume so, then we just wait till her fur grows over it --- Wilf has a rectangular piece missing out of his ear and you would'nt know most of the time. Steve said I can take Ruby to groomers in about 4 weeks

Well she stayed in her crate all night after she'd somehow sneaked up on the chair and the only way she could work out to get off was to fall on her face :o

This morning I took bucket off as Steve suggested to while I was there anyway, plus she refuses to eat, drink go to loo with it on, so then she goes racing through the catflap at speed  :o then back again then eats, then has a chewy thing, takes her tablets (x2 antiobios at once + rimadyl) and her eye drops bribed with numerous treats, then tries to rearrange her bed in the crate then decides to rub her eye all over the bedding in the crate :o --- hence the bucket is back on 20 min later and she's sulking again! I see vet again tomorrow.

It looks really neat Penny, and not half as swollen as Tia's eye was post op!

Its got bigger since and fuller with blood, and while I was attempting to put in eye drops earlier in the other eye she had the bucket off for 5 min and collided, not very hard though, with Wilf (when she was passing him) and it started bleeding a little again. It doesn't seem so bad as to warretn nipping to the vets straight away but have an appointment later

Aw Penny. I can't imagine how awful I would feel seeing Buddy like that, but in a detached position it, even now, looks better than the photo you posted just before the op. Her eye looked so very sore.

Once all the "mucky" stuff has gone, and the hair is all grown back she will be as beautiful as ever. She is a very feisty lady though isn't she? Sulking is so much better than being in pain!

Took little madam with me on saturday to fundraise --- it was either not go at all or leave her in the crate in the car, Ruby did neither. She charmed everyone and was basically as a cocker should be, norty and cheeky and wanting cuddles all the time :luv: Even funnier was when she tried to steal the end of the coffee and got her snozzle stuck in the cup and was standing there with a polystyrene cup for a nose as couldn't get it off as she had the bucket on (it was a bit like an audition for a comedy act)

I love that last pic with the chewy stick posted Penny ;)  But how on earth will she chew that stick with that bucket around her neck. She'll have to sit next to you and you'll have to hold one end for her  :005:

oh she manages very well without my help --- then even manages to go and nick Wilf's as well :005: (he's the one that got his stuck in the fur of his ear and couldn't get it out without help :005:)

She is gorgeous  :luv:

Those lampshades are horrid things  :-\  wont be long and she will be back to her best  :luv:

Jo

to be honest she's really got used to the bucket and will sit for me to put it back on as if its all quite normal. I was dreading her being ill where I'd have to do stuff as she can be really difficult but she's been a real sweetheart especially having drops in her other eye twice a day as she knows she'll also get a treat (the funny thing is though you have to do it as quickly as possible to stop Stanley-cat nicking the top of the bottle :005:then he joins Wilf and Ruby for the giving of a treat even though ony one of them has earned it (Wilf also sits with me while I put the drop in as he knows this process gets him a treat). I live in a mad house sometimes --- while I live on my own you never feel lonely with this lot

Lovely to read that Ruby is doing so well and just getting on with things! You can see from the pics that the sparkle is back in your beautiful girl - she must have been in pain and discomfort so much and now looks wonderful.  Ruby you are a star!!!! Love to you all, Heather xxx

She's doing well, thanks --- has been out on the same walks Wilf has but on lead (I did let her play ball with the chuckit yesterday as the playing field at the bottom of my road was pretty open so she couldn't do any damage.

Vets on monday and hopefully the stitches will come out so she should be able to go offlead properly in about a week.

I may have a pic of her on my camera from today's walk so will dig it out

She looks like any other girlie enjoying the sunshine  :D
I'm really pleased it's not affected her.  She must feel so much better in herself too now that her poorly eye has been sorted out.
Let us know what the vet says on Monday  :shades: :luv:

Yes, Steve said it will look its best round about now, so no doubt it will begin to 'sink in' from now. I'll be getting her groomed soon so will speak to groomer as best way to do that area.

Ruby's still doing well --- she came with me again today when I did some fundraising in Newport and got lots of sympathy cuddles (mind you she took that as being ok to rummage in their bags they had just put down :005:)

I did notice that certain things scare her a bit more (only momentarily though while she susses it out) --- as this was the 1st time she'd been on the train since her op.
