Title: Worried for Rufus
Post by: Rufus01 on October 10, 2011, 04:10:25 PM
Rufus has been home now for 11 days and he is an absolute star-he's settled in really well and we adore him.

Sadly though he has been wobbling around on his back legs-I mentioned in an earlier post-struggling to get his back legs moving at times/struggling to get out his basket/ showing no reflex when the vet pushed his back paws down i.e. doesn't corret himself/ finds it hard to sit on his back legs etc.

So the vet took some x rays and blood tests last week and he has sent the x rays on to a specialist. We are waiting to see what they show, but we are now feeling so awful and anxious. He really has us smitten and we can't help but worry  (the vet questioned whether it is his central nervous system).

Just wondered if anyone has been through anything similar or can just offer any thoughts. Worrying myself silly at the moment.

Thanks
Anna  :016:

Thanks both. Just a really worrying time - he is otherwise such a healthy, happy puppy from a brilliant breeder.

Just hope it is puppy growth pains and nothing more serious-the vet mentioned a whole host of things that I am praying it isn't. Hopefully we'll know more soon.

Oh bless him.  :luv:
I would guess if it was his central nervous system it would have show before now, like when he was still with the breeder.  Could it be a trauma of some sort ?

I do hope it is nothing that cannot be rectified or managed easily. Sending positive thoughts :bigarmhug:

So sorry to hear about Rufus, Anna. Being a curious devil, I just wondered whether you have discussed this with his breeder and asked if any other pups she has bred, especially Rufus's littermates have been afflicted in the same way, or similar? Just a thought. Hopefully the specialist will be able to throw some light on it anyhow and it won't be anything that can't be 'mended'! Positive thoughts coming your way. Keep your chin up - as best you can. x

Title: Re: Worried for Rufus
Post by: Rufus01 on October 13, 2011, 06:05:23 PM
Thanks so much for everyone's thoughts and kindness.

We have had the first lot of x rays back and been recommended to see a neurologist as there are certain images they couldn't get as the spine is so well protected behind bone etc.

Rufus seems happy and well, but he finds it very hard still to use his back legs when getting out his basket. When he drinks from his water bowl, his back legs slide flat under him rather than keep him up. It is very clear they are not doing what they should be doing, regardless of age and growing bones, so I think seeing a specialist is the only answer at this point. We've eliminated a number of parasites through doing blood tests, but given his reflexes are so bad in his hind legs, it is more likely to be central nervpus system. He really only uses his back legs when he is on the go-sounds odd but most the time he flops down on them and uses his front ones.

It is very worrying but trying to keep positive that it will be something we can fix, rather than something debilitating.

Anna x

Am so sorry to hear about little Rufus' problem with his back legs. It's hard watching an older dog when they have problems with mobility but I really feel for you watching a youngster not having the power in his legs. I do hope the specialist will be able to suggest a line of treatment to solve the problem.

I'm so sorry you are having this problem with Rufus, what a worry for you all. I have an old CKCS who suffers from arthritis and has  mobility problems and that is bad enough to watch, but as Rufus is so young it's really sad. I hope that when you get to see the Specialist he will be able to give you some answers, and hopefully a treatment plan that will help him recover.

In the meantime lots of positive thoughts and  :bigarmhug: to you and Rufus.

Hello all,

I am feeling decidedly cheerier today. Rufus is still sluggish with his rear legs, and it is very clear that it is something neurological that we need to resolve, but he is to all intents and purposes a very happy, healthy puppy. He is eating well, putting on weight (judging by his paws he is going to be a stocky boy!), and he even met another couple of puppies last night and we proudly watched as he played nicely and enthusiastically.

It's interesting that we have now noticed he is a bit slow generally and we now wonder if it is all related., implying that it is something to do with his nervous system. Hopeful though that at no point will it stop him from leading a very long and comfortable life.

Once we have seen a specialist I will post an update, but for now I wanted to post something positive as he really is a little star!

Anna x

Poor little Rufus. However, he doesn't care if he is a bit wobbly; that's the great thing about being a puppy not a person  As long as he is healthy and has good quality of life there's no reason he shouldn't have a long and happy one. Here's a video of a couple of "CH" cats (neurological disease caused by worm infestation in mother) -  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qjl5eHlaPb8&feature=related If you do a search on "wobbly kittens" there are lots on Youtube. The cats are very healthy and happy, they just happen to be wobbly!

Dear all,

Thank you so much for keeping your thoughts with us. Little Rufus has had not only his parents worried but lots of other lovely cocker owners too.

We do feel much more positive- his back legs are still sluggish especially when he gets out his basket, or when he goes to sit, but he seems lively and happy, and not in any pain. We have wanted to see if it is progressive and do not think it is, but we will be going to a neurologist nonetheless as the vet has done all the tests possible before consulting a specialist.

I think every time he gives me a big sloppy kiss my worry reduces a little  :luv:. He really does make us so happy and if he does have a problem with his nervous system, it just makes him even more special!!

Thanks for your kind thoughts

Anna and Rufus x

Hello and thanks to everyone for the kind emails.

Rufus is doing very well. He is growing (rapidly it seems!) and his back legs do seem stronger. At times he drags them a bit but generally he bounds around and causes mayhem like any cocker puppy does.

He really is amazing. If in time his legs start to deteriorate we will see a neurologist but for now we are heartened by his development.

Thanks all x

What did the vet say? I hope it's not any pelvic or other joint problems.
