vernie had removal of femur head
« on: September 20, 2008, 07:52:01 AM »
Just a quick update for those interested:
Vernie had his operation on tuesday and they have removed the head of the femur (necrotic due to Legg Perthes disease) He recovered very quickly from the anaesthetic and was eating bits that night and the following day back to normal diet and longingly looking at whatever we were eating!
He does look a bit like a show poodle with the fantastic shave the vets did on his leg - obviously they're not professional stylists.....
I also cannot believe how much that lovely long fur hides the fact that he has a horrid chicken leg! He does look a little embarrased by this.
He is not weight bearing yet and it does look awful that it is just hanging as he runs around on 3 legs - the operation has not slowed him down and 2 days post op we were still having to keep him caged to try to get the swelling down a bit. Yesterday and today though he is out on his mat and we will just try to get him to take it easy - although he does need to keep the mobility in that joint. 2 - 3 weeks he should be putting a bit of weight on it.
We have sent off for hydrotherapy and intend him to start swimming lessons as soon as the vet ok's it.
Thanks for all your messages - lets hope the progress continues!

Glad Vernies had his op and doing ok, good job the weather is mild at the mo or his 'chicken leg' might have been a frozen one!!!!  Love to you and Vernie for speedy full recovery, Heather xxx
