Title: Meg's Op Was a Success *UPDATED*
Post by: LouiseAS on July 23, 2010, 11:50:07 AM
I cant believe it, a week before her eye op  :'(

I was up all night with her from about midnight (she was fine before that), then this morning she started passing pure blood so at 8.30 I was on the vet's doorstep.  She's now enjoying a very expensive stay in hospital.

I'm at work but TBH I'm so tired nothing is making any sense but I'd rather be here than sitting at home clock watching.  I have to ring the vets at 12.30 to see how she is.

Her temperature was normal, heart wasn't racing, she was just very dehydrated.  The vet doesn't think it's anything more sinister because she has been so healthy but if they're not happy with her by midday they will run bloods on her.

I feel sick, I'm so worried.

Poor Meg - Dallas had this at 11 weeks old and it is certainly not pleasant  :P

Really hope it's nothing more serious and she recovers quickly - might be worth speaking to the specialist as they may want to delay the op.

Get well soon Meg  :luv:

My vet did say that we'll monitor her closely and see how she goes because of the op. I guess they will make the decision for me on that one.

Thanks every one for your good wishes. I'll know a bit more in half an hour.

Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that Louise :'(  Rodaidh had HGE the week before I came back from South America two years ago, my parents were looking after him and they were worried sick, he spent a couple of days in the vets on a drip but he recovered fine. I hope Meg makes a good and speedy recovery, sending loads of good thoughts :bigarmhug:

Thanks everyone.

I've just called the vet, she's looking much brighter and she's responded well to the fluids and IV antibiotics.  Her kidney and liver function are normal.

They're now doing a "snap test" for pancriatitus(sp?) as the vet is concerned it could be that.  I don't really know much about his but she said that it doesn't effect her quality of life for her eye op.

I'll know more at 4pm today when I have to call them again.

Well that is a bit of good news anyway.  Kali had the same test when she had pancreatitis.  She had quite a mild form so I could take her home.  My first dog Sally (a Welsh collie) used to get frequent bouts of HGE and it is so scary.  Hope she continues to make good progress and you can then relax a bit xx :-*

Well good news she has tested negative for everything.  I'm picking her up in a few minutes.

She has to go back in the morning just for a checkup and she has some medicines to take but the main thing is it's nothing serious.

Phew!  Thanks for all the good wishes everyone, it really did help.

sorry I missed this Louise - so glad Meg is on the mend - Jarv had 36 hours on a drip with HGE, it was a horrendous experience....but he recovered really really quickly  :D

Little meals and often were the key - he has no problem with chicken and rice and once he was eating again he recovered within days  :luv: :luv:

Hope Meg is the same and she's strong enough for her op next week :bigarmhug:

I had a text from Louise earlier & I just thought I'd share the good news that Meg is recovering well from her op today to remove her cataracts.  :D  She is also completely over that passing blood scare.

I saw Meg at work on Wednesday.  She toddled out from under the desk to greet me & then we had a cuddle.  As usual I just couldn't get her to settle!  :005: :luv:

As Sav says she recovered well from her op.  I was, however, asked to take her home at 9pm on Friday night because she was howling the place down and wouldn't settle which the specialist (Rob Lowe  :005:) felt wasn't going to help her.

She slept all Friday night and awoke on Saturday a new dog.  She can't have anti-inflammatories because of her bout of stomach upset so she just has antibiotics and drops also she'll have to have optimmune for the rest of her life.

I now have a dog that is completely relaxed on walks again and is so much happier it's unbelievable. I admit to shedding a couple of tears after our first walk on Saturday as I now have my old Meg back again.  This operation has taken years off her.  People in the village that know her noticed straight away the difference in the way she was walking along instead of shuffling with her head down.

Hopefully she'll continue to recover well. We have a check up on Thursday, after that the suchers (sp?) will dissolve that are holding the new lenses in place.  She doesn't have to wear a buster collar, thank goodness, but I do have to watch the amount she scratches her ears etc. So far though she only tries to scratch her eyes when she's due for her drops.

That is wonderful news   you are a brave girl Meg :luv:    I can understand how you must be feeling seeing her enjoying her walk.  I know what you mean with walking with the head down. Dylan does the same and he has slowed down so much bless him.

It is marvelous that they can do this op we sometimes moan about the cost of vet treatment , but when you see what miracles they can work . :luv

I wish you and Meg all the best in her recovery.  Best wishes from Erica  Dylan & Jessie.

I would recommend it. It was a bit of a hassle finding a specialist but I'm sure your vet will refer you no problem.

My Petal had her cataract removed and lens replaced when she was just 6 months old, and the difference the day afterwards was amazing.......although keeping a 6 month old quiet so she wouldn't knock her face etc was more difficult.  But to see her confidence almost appear overnight was fantastic.

I'm so pleased Meg is feeling better and the op a success, it certain brings a new lease of life into them doesn't it.

Its so amazing what they've managed to do for Meg.... its one of those things that I guess in my head only happened to people, but to hear about Meg benefiting from it, and it having such an immediate effect for her - its just brilliant.  You must be over the moon you followed up with the insurance to see if they would cover it - I imagine a lot of people wouldn't just because they assume it wouldn't be covered.  Fair play to you for persevering and giving Meg a whole new lease of life  :luv: :luv:
