Vet cannot find out what is wrong with Spud
« on: May 20, 2006, 09:53:31 PM »
We have just collected Spud from his 3rd visit to the vets in the last 3 days.
We( and they) just cannnot figure out what is wrong with him.I took him on thursday night as he was walking funny and kept sitting down quickly and in the" Scooting" position. He wouldnt jump into or out of the car and cried when he was picked up.The Vet examined him ,checked his anal glands (which had been cleared by the groomer on the previous Monday) really checked his mobility well, had me running up and down the car park to see how he moved.Could not find anything wrong with him, he precribed Metacam and told me to go back on Monday. However Friday he was worse so we took him back in the afternoon, saw a different Vet who again checked him over throughly and as he yelped when she checked his bowel they kept him in and took an x-ray of his stomach.I collected him last night, they didnt find anything wrong with his bowel but gave him a Metacam injection When we got home he went straight into the garden for  a pooh (which was normal). This morning he was yelping with pain when he walked so we took him back again, saw a different Vet again, by this time he was walking sort of sideways and not putting hardly any weight onto his  hind leg. They kept him in for another X-Ray on his leg, back and pelvis, again nothing. He has now had a morphine based pain killer. We have got to take him back tomorrow for another pain killing injection. The Vet is sending the X-rays to a specialist on Monday and we have got to take Spud to see him on Monday afternoon. She is now talking about nerve damage to the spine.

Cruciate ligament injury ?

Is he only limping on one leg, or is the lameness moving from one leg to another ?

Have they taken bloods ? or just x-rayed ?

He is only lame in one back leg, and no they have not taken bloods just X-Rays.
Just going to google cruciate ligament injury to see if it ties in

Cant help but think this might be linked in to the groomers, taking that its the only thing thats been different and the limp came on shortly after.

Might be worth a call to the groomer and simply stating that you need to know if anything happened to your dog whilst at the groomer, for example did he fall of a table, did he get "knicked" with the cutters / scissors, have any other dogs "gone sick"

It could well be nerve damage, but it could just be an infection (or tic bite) picked up from the groomers, esp when they did the anal glands,  and paw pads does the vet know that this came on after a trip to the groom?

Hope spud gets better soon

So sorry to read about Spud Wendy.

I do hope the specialist is able to make a conclusive diagnosis after Monday as I think the worst thing is not knowing what you're dealing with.

Do keep us posted.

Thanks for all your replies. We have taken Spud back to the emergeny vets this morning, where another Vet examined him.My OH sat up with Spud all night as he was obviously in alot of pain and wouldn't settle. After watching him last night and this morning we told the Vet that we thought that the problem was with his stomach/bowel rather than any bone/nerve damage, and he agreed with us.Another pain killer until we go back tomorrow.
Getting increasing disillusioned with the Vets, poor dog has been seen by 4 different Vets now,2 anasthetics for the X-Rays and still no diagnosis. His stomach has been making gurgling noises all day and he has been passing enough (pungent) gas to float a hot air balloon. My OH is taking him tomorrow and hopefully they will at last sort some treatment out.
We felt after the comment about spinal nerve damage that we would be having him PTS so at least we feel relieved about that.
He has been to the toilet OK and is eating.I dont know if the first X-Ray would show his bowel as well as his stomach or not.
Also on the expense side although of course we would pay anything to get him right we have paid for 4 consultation fees, X-Rays
etc £250 in total already and still  a poorly dog who is in pain.

To Solid Worker  My OH is going to ring the groomers tomorrow as we also had this thought
Will keep you posted tomorrow

Once again thanks for your thoughts and replies
