Meg has hypothyroidism
« on: September 01, 2010, 11:55:03 AM »
Meg has been showing some symptoms for a while now- lost some hair on her tail, very lazy, put some weight on, sleeps a lot- to be honest we didnt really link them all up and sadly dismissed it all as a sign she was getting a bit older :-\. Luckily, on Sunday night my aunty happened to mention about her dog having an underactive thyroid and noticed some of the symptoms in Meg.
So, i googled it and did a search on here and all of the symptoms were just describing her. We got all in a tizzy and realised we should have done something a bit sooner :'( and made an appointment to see the vet. They took blood tests and did a test called 'T4' which showed up positive.
I think we are relieved really that it was this (that can be managed) and not something more serious.
We are off to pick her meds up this afternoon which she will have once a day for 3 weeks, then its back to the vets for more tests.

Please spare some thoughts for our girl :luv:

Fingers crossed the tablets help her.

Certainly will - poor little soul. And send some positive vibes for you and her  :bigarmhug:

As you say it is treatable and that will bring you some comfort hopefully.

My thoughts are with you - I know like others on this site what it is like to have a poorly pooch.

She is such a beautiful looking Cocker - best wishes.

Sending  :bigarmhug: to Meg and you. Holly suffered from this and like you thought her symptoms were just getting old. Once on the meds though it was like she had a new lease on life  :D

Don't feel too bad - I suspected Vegas was hypothyroid for about 18 months before I had him tested!  ph34r  His only symptom up until that point was that I couldn't get the weight off him but then he started feeling cold all the time so I got the vet to test him and his results came back very low. After his initial 3 weeks on the tabs, his blood test showed his levels had gone right up to the middle of the reference range - couldn't get any better really! I didn't really notice any difference in him until after about 2 weeks on the medication then he seemed to be a bit more playful, a lot nicer to the other 2 dogs  :005: and just a bit more active in general. It was only when I saw these changes that I realised just how sluggish and lazy he had gotten - you just don't really notice if its such a gradual thing and like you say, just put it down to them being a bit older and slowing down naturally.

Anyhoo, that was my experience of it so hopefully Meg responds well to the treatment (and enjoys her daily piece of ham  :lol2::luv:

Actually, thyroid issues is not the end of the world. It is very treatable and Meg will have a perfectly normal life, though it does of course mean medication for life.

I have two hypothyroid dogs. One has autoimmune thyroiditis, the other normal hypothyroidsm (they both had very different symptoms though). Both are on medication and doing absolutely fine.

I hope the tablets give Meg her bounce back.  ;) :D

lots of special thoughts for Megs as requested Emma   ;) :luv:
Hope the meds start to work soon & you have your rejuvenated girlie back ...bless her

(I don't know much about the condition Emma but it sounds like even the most trained eye, doesn't always pick up on it because the of the way symptoms creep on subtly - think your Auntie & you did very well to recognise it in Megs  ;)  :-*  )
