Title: More surgery for William tomorrow
Post by: elaine.e on October 04, 2015, 03:28:36 PM
My lovely boy is getting a reputation for having unusual lumps! After having a minute unusual lump removed from his tongue just over 3 months ago he now has another minute unusual lump, this time in the third eyelid of his right eye. I noticed it a few weeks ago so took him to the ophthalmologist who checks his eyes every 6 months because he has Dry Eye and cataracts. She wasn't sure what it was and prescribed some steroidal eye drops to see if they would get rid of it. They didn't, so I phoned her and had a talk with her about it because William has two other lumps that might need surgery that are being monitored by my usual vet. Next step was a visit to my usual vet, followed by a phone conversation between the 2 vets.

The consensus is that the minute lump in his third eyelid should be removed in case it's something nasty like a squamous cell carcinoma. Neither vet is sure what it is, but removing it now while it's still tiny, and sending it off for investigation seems sensible. Both the vets have a niggling worry about it, especially as the lump on William's tongue turned out to be cancer. Not that this is related to that, but he seems to be prone to unusual lumps, so it adds to the concern.

As he'll need a GA for that he's also going to have a tiny lump removed from his gum, believed to be a harmless Epulis, but no certainty because the lump on his tongue looked very similar. He's also going to have a fatty lump removed. It's next to his penis (and is known as Willy's willy lump :005:) and is growing rapidly. If it gets much bigger it will affect his waterworks. So rather than wait and see, and then probably needing it removed in the next few months, that will be removed tomorrow too.

Please send some positive thoughts for William tomorrow. The eye and mouth surgery will be quite quick to do and should heal quickly. The fatty lump will take longer and will have quite a few stitches. Then it will be the nerve wracking wait for me until the test results on the eyelid lump come through, plus nursing my boy in his cone of shame. He takes a while to recover from anaesthesia and the last time he was quite poorly for a while.

Louis will be going to stay with his Auntie Maria for a few days because he'll get himself worried about the veterinary smell of William and will be constantly sniffing him and pushing him round and generally being a pain in the bum!

Sending  :bigarmhug: to the very handsome William  :luv:
Hoping all his lumps are harmless ones, they do seem to get a few as they get older don't they.
Keeping everything crossed for the eyelid lump, it sounds like whatever it is you are on top of it very quickly which has to be good news.

Will be thinking of you both tomorrow and hoping William is back home with you very soon and not feeling too bad from the anaesthetic.

Thankyou for all your good wishes. I dropped William off just after 9.00 and his is the only surgery being done today, so hopefully I'll be able to pick him up early this afternoon. It's being done at the smaller of the two premises that my vet practice operates, just one vet, 2 nurses and a receptionist. Because William is their only surgical patient today and they haven't had any in patients over the weekend he was being cuddled by the vet nurses when I left because they didn't have any tasks apart from cuddling and blood testing and prepping William. So apart from the lack of treats he was looking pretty happy.

Now I'm about to embark on some serious housework, a deep clean of the study. It's not often all the books and DVDs are removed from the shelves, and the dog beds, desk and cabinets moved out so I can shampoo the carpet, but today's the day. Should keep me busy for a few hours :005:

Just had a phone call from the vet nurse to say that everything went well and William is coming round from the anaesthetic. I can't collect him until 4.30 because they want to make sure he's wide awake and has eaten a light meal successfully, but they're very pleased with him so far. They had a bit of trouble finding a vein in one front leg to take bloods, so had to try the other one, but that's not a new problem with him.

All three lumps have been sent off for histology (is that the right word?) simply because the charge of about £60 covers up to three, and although we already know the fatty lump is harmless the vet is looking for legal ways to weight as much of the bill as possible towards the fatty lump because William's insurance excess is so high. Will had already seen the vet three times to have the lump checked and measured, plus it will have been the longest part of the procedures today so they can genuinely attribute much of the anaesthesia, nurse time and vet time to it. I won't get anything from my insurers for the eye and gum lumps because a separate excess will apply to each of those and although William's insurance premium barely increased on renewal in August they hiked his excess for new conditions up to £200!

Looking forward to getting my boy home and spending time holding his paw and nursing him and feeding him little meals of scrambled egg this evening. I expect I'll be sleeping downstairs with him tonight just to keep an eye on him.

We had a bit of a rough night. He loathes wearing the cone of shame so I leave it off as much as possible, but I have to watch him like a hawk because he keeps licking the stitches in his groin. He slept on my bed last night, complete with the cone, and whined a lot. I find that really upsetting, especially when I'm not sure if it's the cone or pain from the wound and stitches in his groin. It's not his eye or gum as he doesn't seem to have noticed anything has been done to either!

This morning he's had the cone off for a couple of hours, no whining, but it's now back on because I need to be doing things apart from just watching him. So the whining has started again. I can't give him any more Meloxidyl until about lunchtime but I've been giving him homeopathic arnica, hypericum and opium to help with any bruising and to help with calmness and pain relief. The vet who does his acupuncture also does homeopathy and she gave me some advice last night.

On the positive side he's eating, peeing and pooping normally. He hasn't had a drink yet, but I've been drowning his scrambled egg in warm water to keep him hydrated!

Poor William :016: Would he be more comfortable with a comfy collar, i know George was so much more comfortable with one of these and was able to walk, sleep and eat with it. with the cone of shame, he would just stand there, depressed and not moving an inch. I hope he continues to make good progress :luv:

He has a comfy cone, which is padded, but I know that the comfy collar isn't enough to stop him being able to lick his groin. For an old dog with back problems he's surprisingly flexible! Thanks for the suggestion though :D

If he's still worrying about the cone tomorrow I might give that a try. I'll have to guess the size though, unless anyone on here has used one and can help. William is a show type, just under 16" at the shoulder and weighs 14.2kg. So for those familiar with show types as seen in the show ring, that's him in terms of size and overall build, but probably a little bit slimmer than many show dogs.

Coco is about 13 kg and she had one for an 18 month old baby - £1 in the charity shop  :D

So, I would suggest 18-24 months for William - you can cut it to fit if you need to.  Make sure it has fasteners up the front - hers has poppers!  ;)

I'm sorry I missed all of this wrapped up in my own drama. I know you must be worried waiting for those tests to come back. I hope it's good news for you and William too.

Teddy hates the cone of shame too and trying to get into his soft crate with it on is a little comical...his face clearly says my parents are ridiculous.

Thanks for asking :D

Right now he's sat next to me wearing a fetching pale blue babygrow and whining for his tea! He's very well in himself and his gum and eye are healing beautifully. The area around the stitches in his groin is quite bruised and I think he finds it itchy because he tries to lick it given the chance, although I've noticed that less today than on previous days.

Louis is coming home tomorrow, so that will be interesting as he's been at my friend Maria's for a week. Hopefully William no longer smells of antiseptic etc. and Louis won't get unsettled and pushy.

I did same with Stella after Bosley's eye up (in her case it was 4 weeks) but she gets unsettled as well re odd things like this (that wasn't the reason why she was 'banished) but I give her melatonin, which helps (when Roobs tumour was smelly and infected Stella kept attacking her or just getting upset in her presence).

Good news :D

Andy the vet left a phone message this afternoon saying that the pathology for the lumps has shown nothing nasty, so there's nothing to worry about :cool4: :cool4:

Today has been the first day without the babygrow because William has stopped trying to lick the wound and stitches in the groin area and all the bruising and swelling has finally gone down. Back to the vet on Friday for stitches out.
