update on penny -
« on: February 18, 2015, 09:30:36 AM »
i posted recently about Penny having watery diarrhoea and slimy poo. By the end of the next day things seemed back to normal so I thought it must have been something she ate. Well since then Penny seemed very much out of sorts - she developed conjunctivitis, seemed extremely tired, taking herself to bed extra early and sitting around instead of interacting joyfully with everyone in the house as she usually does.
Then i noticed she was biting and licking one of her back feet, although not limping.

I took her to the vet last night and the vet shaved away her fur to reveal a huge red lump on the top side of her paw. I was astonished as I groom her fastidiously and I had not noticed it. The vet thinks it is either a tumour, an abcess, or a grass seed, although there is no obvious entry point for a grass seed.

Poor Penny was almost hysterical as the vet put a needle into the centre of the lump without an anaesthetic. Some fluid came out, but not much. The vet then gave her a local anaesthetic and then explored the site to see if she could find anything- such as a grass seed. She couldn't, so sent both of us home with antibiotics and a painkiller.( Penny had these -I had a large alcoholic drink!)

OH has been sitting with Penny most of the day today-you can't do much else when a cocker looks at you so dolefully! We have to go back to the vet tomorrow to get the bandages changed.

I really have no idea whether all these ailments are related. The vet said sometimes skin irritations and stomach irritations are related, and suggested I try a brand of dry food formulated for sensitive skin. She gave me a sample and Penny did deign to try some, although as Ive said before Penny hates dry food.

fingers crossed that this round of antibiotics will clear all these problems up.!

Have you thought about homeopathic Silica? It's given orally and can be very good at drawing out infection and foreign bodies such as grass seeds. Boots and many other chemists sell it. Even if the lump turns out to be something else you won't have lost anything by trying Silica.

Here's a link to a previous thread about Silica including dosage on page 3 http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php?topic=36408.msg497832#msg497832

If you do a search on here about Silica you'll find other threads about it too.

Thanks very much Elaine. You are a treasure trove of information! No Boots stores in Australia but I'll go to the local chemist and see if I can get some silica tomorrow

Penny is still no better. She's been on antibiotics for 5 days now, and also on painkillers. The vet took the bandage off the lump yesterday to give it some air, but Penny has been biting at the lump continually . She's really uncomfortable, almost frantically biting it. I'm putting beta dine ointment and salon cream on it, but nothing's working. She's booked in to have a general anaesthetic on Friday to work out what it is.

I took Elaine's advice and have been giving her silica tablets but to no effect so far.

On top of all this it looks as if she may have dry eye. She tested at 9 in one eye and eleven in the other last Thursday. She's got conjunctivitis so she's on Maxitrol for a week and then is to be tested again. The conjunctivitis doesn't seem to be going away, so I'm guessing it must be dry eye.

It's very stressful having a sick cocker -last week I was just idly reading COL and now I'm madly searching all the threads to try to understand what to do for the best

I'm really sorry Penny is unwell I think we can all understand how awful it is when our lovely dogs are sick.
Grass seeds really are terrible things but I guess at least if the vet can find it you will have an answer and Penny will be on her way to recovery.

Teddy also has conjunctivitis, I've never had a dog with it before, our vet said it was probably picked up from another dog while out socialising. I'm not that sure as he has been saying hello and running around but not wrestling or having his face or paws in contact with another dogs. He just woke up the other morning with a glued together eye.

Friday is a long time to wait and worry. maybe Penny needs some sort of collar or bandage so she leaves the lump alone?
