nasty to puppies
« on: August 20, 2020, 03:30:41 PM »
hi all,
I have a 2 year old male cocker spaniel who has recently started to be nasty to puppies.he is fine with older dogs and people.I do not want this behaviour to continue or get worse as it is not acceptable . I would hate a dog to be like this with a puppy I had.I usually walk him off lead in countryside and he is good with recall but am now thinking i should keep him on a lead incase someone with a puppy is nearby.
wondering if having him castrated will help.

It’s unlikely to help.  He’s transitioning to being an adult dog and possibly just doesn’t want to be bothered by young dogs.  It’s a human trait to believe that all dogs need to be socialised at every opportunity!  Yes, in their first 6 months of age but after than they don’t need to and some don’t want to!  We have 5 cockers, only 1 will will tolerate strange dogs coming up to her but equally, she’s not really been exposed to many and my guess is she will soon tell them off if she’s doesn’t like it!

I think its also because pups can be unpredictable and they just don't want one jumping all over them (Boz had a 6 month old working cocker jump all over his head once despite me telling owner that Boz had just had a major eye op and was onlead too, and then my dog went for pup - woman walked off and said I hope he's better behaved when he's feeling better - how dare she and how would she like that if someone did that to her after an op or to her dog) - its up to puppy owners to make sure they don't do that to dogs they meet and don't know too.

we've got a very boisterous nearly 6 month old cocker who would approach every dog if I let him

I do think puppy owners bear a responsibility here too. If I see a dog on lead when we are walking off lead, I assume the owners don't want their dog to be approached by him and unless I hear/see a cue that says otherwise, I'll recall him and put him on lead to be sure he doesn't

if a dog is off lead, I would probably assume it was ok but I would still try and make eye contact with the owner beforehand and if they signalled it wasn't, I'd expect both of us to call our dogs back

the issue of course is when they are roaming fairly far away which does happen - if he's good with recall, can you just call him back? Frank has been attacked (while he was on lead) twice by the same labrador as his useless owner doesn't recall him (I imagine he can't but in that case, don't have him off lead) - I understand that some dogs will be nasty to puppies but I think the key thing is to make sure you can call him back before he has the chance to.
