Saddened by breeders reaction...
« on: August 28, 2016, 08:02:50 AM »
So as some of you may know I'm on the lookout for a new pup to come and join our family! I'm not having much luck at the moment, breeders being hours and hours away, only having scanned one pup etc etc.

I joined a closed Facebook group the other day of a breeder based not too far from me. I put a post in the group asking if she had any litters due, if she could give me some more info and put a photo up of Monty, and gave some back ground about myself.

The breeder (owner of the group) then simply asked "is this the boy from X and X breeders?" I answered yes, as she was correct. I was promptly kicked out and blocked from the group.

It really saddens me that obviously Monty's breeders have been bad mouthing me when I've done nothing wrong. Really sad situation as I've got a wonderful home to provide to a pup. Such a shame that I'm being judged on the mistaken opinion of someone else [emoji17]

Not sure what the background here is sorry but why would Monty's breeder be badmouthing you? If you no longer have a good relationship with Monty's breeder and he/she is a friend of the breeder you have contacted, then maybe that explains the reaction? Or it could be the opposite - they may dislike Monty's breeder. Either way, it would have been polite to send you a message explaining why but quite honestly, why bother with someone like this? I'm not a big fan of Facebook for finding good breeders but maybe I'm too "old school" :lol2:

Sadly I no longer have a good relationship with Monty's breeders. After I told them about his hip dysplasia diagnosis they accused me of trying to ruin their reputation, and causing trouble for them, even though I said nothing derogatory in any manner, I simply informed them as I thought they would want to know!

Think I'll be going the old school route of finding a breeder and be calling them up! I'm not in a rush at all, just have been looking for a fair while now!

You're right I shouldn't be bothered by her reaction, it just made me a little upset it all!

We got our dog from an ordinary home environment who kept one dog and one bitch.

You got to meet both parents and judge their behaviour in an ordinary setting.
You also judged the keepers. It's not a puppy farm if they were born in the living room of a house in north London.

They had had ten pups in the first litter. The second litter was bit unexpected and had nine pups.

They told us to take the Golden one even though it was the smallest and "tail-end" Charlie because in the first litter the Gold one turned out nice. We did and I suppose this was risky.

Here is the pup on the day he came:

My son found them through the Kennel Club. They were properly registered and health checked.
I liked this way of finding a pup. Old fashioned and free from commercialism. I'd say they covered their costs and maybe had a bit left over.

Here he is at two:

You can compare this with the picture in a current thread where the "trainer" has made two dogs sit.
Something about the eyes and face is different I think.

Ah I see - not impressed by Monty's breeder if she doesn't want to know about serious health issues in puppies she has produced >:(  Sounds like the Facebook breeder is of a similar mindset so you may have had a lucky escape ;)

Alan, were your dog's parent's hip scored? In my experience, the sort of breeder you mention may have had basic health checks done on their dogs but they almost certainly won't have hip scored. Monty has HD so I'm guessing Pollyspaull will be looking for a breeder who does hip score to reduce the chance of this happening again with her next puppy. HD is not uncommon in Cockers so I don't understand why so few breeders bother about hip scoring or say there is no problem in the breed - there obviously is (and it's just as likely to happen with a "home" litter from pet parents as with one from commercial kennels)

I believe so. My son did the research and knew all about hips and eyes and so on.
They had just lost a pup, not a Spaniel, because of genetic problem.

I've met a few dogs from here:

Very beautiful.

Polly I think that you are probably lucky as it sounds like the breeder is not bothered about their puppies either. We all know what you and Monty have been through and if a breeder is not open to having their bloodlines opened up for scrutiny then stay well clear. Alan has given some good advice and there are many good small time breeders about but do your research as he says.

A tiny minority of breeders hip score so it would be very unusual for a pet breeder to hip score and do the DNA tests too (the cost would run into hundreds of pounds) but if your breeder is one of the minority, good on them!

Sorry Alan, you can't post breeder links on the boards - feel free to send to PollySpaull by PM though (I agree the link you posted belongs to a decent breeder)

To be honest, although I use facebook for communicating with friends and family, I've found that the general behaviour of some people on some of the specialized group pages is awful and highlights even more how super this site is. Its quite a phenomena and I've experienced it both on UK and German sites, some people don't seem to be able to make an comment or reply without being insulting or rude. I also went down the list of registered breeders route (we have a German Dog club which is a similar set up to the KC) and although health issues can never be ruled out, I think the risks are lower. A good, serious breeder would always have the dogs' welfare at heart and would be grateful for any issues being pointed out. Best of luck with your search (I'm very envious as I'm now feeling "broody" ;)). Keep us posted!

Like Alan, we got our pup from a home breeder where both parents were pets. We visited the home, met both the parents and the entire litter. The usual health checks were done, but not hip scores. When we saw the litter Henry was the only one not already sold - he was the only solid black. The others were golden or black and gold, which seem more popular. The breeder told us up front Henry was a bit 'alpha' as he always pushed forwards to eat first, and we should consider that. But she also showed us how to make his tail wag like a metronome by tucking him under her chin and rubbing his chest, and said he was first in line for evening cuddles when the pups were let out of their pen for socialisation. As first time dog owners, everything just FELT right, apart from all the usual checks.

It seems to me there are risks wherever you get your pup from, and you have to go with what feels right for you.

Oh, and if Henry was alpha in that litter, the rest of them must have been the most laid back pups ever!

Apologies to moderators. I go on car forum where we often mention suppliers.

I should just have said that I've met a few dogs from a small breeder near me, who seems to have a nice line.

I too think you have had a lucky escape Polly.  Not impressed by the attitude of Monty's breeder.  I can understand why you are upset, any repuitable breeder should have welcomed your feedback concerning the hip dysplasia both for the sake of her future breed lines and her reputation.

Sorry to read you are having little luck...but sometimes waiting finds what we are looking for.

Do not want to offend any breeder we know and love, but am sure she will laugh at this.....the only time I ever went to a Cocker Dog show was to meet a breeder - she had been charming on the phone, and actually phoned me twice on Saturday and once on the Sunday to say she was at the show, so OH and I drove the 40mins to venue.

I arrived and was gob smacked, amazed - lost for words - it was like a mini Cruffs, the most immaculate cockers you have ever seen, my eyes were everywhere at the perfect cockers.....but I felt so out of place, plus it was very much a them and us between the breeders.  All in there own little areas, like all people some never gave a glance and others a lovely smile. It really looked clicky!  As for the breeder it was like I was talking to a different person, I was given the third degree, and she was a little rude, while I felt  a good breeder I would ask all the questions, OH was not amused, and walked off back to the car.  She couldn't let us have the dog, but might let us have a bitch, which was not what I wanted. The dog was only about one and hadn't taken to showing - Less than an hour ago it had been so different - it was obvious that she had come to some arrangement with someone at the show.....I walked out very disheartened, a breeder who I had chatted to when I first entered the venue was walking her dog outside again another chat and told me not to give up my search.

So there are good and bad everywhere,

Good luck

Julie
Cocker kisses and cuddles just make my day!

You are always with me darlings Jaypup and my precious Oliver you are so missed
