Open Shows
« on: February 02, 2005, 10:32:49 AM »
Hi

I am planning to start showing my pup and having visited Champ shows thought it would probably be best to start with companion/open shows.

Is there an Open show diary for 2005 or webpage with details of shows local to Sussex but I am prepared to travel.

Any advice regarding showing would be greatly received, I've read many threads but it all gets very confusing!!!  My pup is 4 months old and I know she can't be shown until she is 6 months, but also realise that you have to 'book them in advance'.

Thanks in advance

Maybe you could go along to your local ringcraft classes?  They should be able to help you get the best from your dog, and may be able to advise where there are smaller, friendly open shows in your local area and/or may have heard if there are any companion shows coming up to help you get started?

Prodogs

If you have a look at this website, quite a few shows are listed also the dog papers (Dog World and Our Dogs) list quite a few, and the kennel club gazette lists most shows.

Are you anywhere near The South of England showground at Ardingly?

Yes, about 15mins away but my pup won't be old enough to take part in March, although I plan to go with my stud dogs breeder.  I'm having problems locating details of shows so that I can plan in advance for when my pup will be 6 months on April 6th

Thanks for the link - very helpful

If you go to your newsagents and ask them to order the weekly dog paper Dog World for you, you will see that it has a good coverage of the shows (Companion, Open & Championship) throughout the country. :D

Hi thanks for the diary dates, and Dessie has also added dates as well.

I haven't got a grooming table at the moment, do you have to have one when you attend shows, I use the draining board in my utility room with a mat on it at the moment, but that would be too awkward to take to a show!!

Will have a word with the newsagent about the Dog World paper, thanks for the advice and will look out for Kim at Ardingly, can I bring my own dogs for socialisation even though they won't be shown??

You don't HAVE to have a table, but it helps  :)
I would, however, recommend a crate, on top of which you can put a mat so you can titivate your dog before it goes in the ring  :)
If I'm at the same show, you can always borrow my table when I'm not using it.
I wouldn't buy a table until you are sure you want to continue showng  :)

As for taking a dog that's not entered, it is actually against KC rules, but you will probably get away with it at Ardingly  ;)

edited for poor punctuation
