which lead???
« on: October 17, 2006, 12:40:04 PM »
Hiya,
i have been looking at leads for showing, i know it's too early for my Daisey but i like to be prepared!
I have seen many "show leads" ranging in width but i have also seen a martingale lead which i think look great for my goldie but i am sure many of you show pwople will advise me as i don't want to look like a fool in the ring with the wrong blooming lead.
Many thanks
Peta

I dont show my girl, and wonder whether to a certain extent the lead is personal pereference, and what works for your dog?  If a lead different to what most use makes your dog more comfortable, and the dog moves better in it then they will probably give a better overall impression?  But I'd be interested to hear the opinions of the people who do show on this, as I have very little experience to draw on.

But...I've noticed though that a lot of the show dogs use a fine lead that has a large open loop (to go round the neck, that can then be drawn back around the shoulder of the dog when it is stacked).  There is then a 'toggle' that can be pulled down the lead to make the open loop smaller for when the dog is moving.  They look really nice, especially the leather ones.

I use a rolled leather show lead with a metal toggle in the middle so the lead doesnt twist, its quite slim so as it doesn't distract from the dog. I prefer leather as it is softer on your hands. I think mine was about £15.00 but you can get the nylon ones for less than that.

well,
i have bought my leads, they are very different to one and other though.
I got a Resco Cordo-Hyde show lead for my goldie and a rolled leather half-check complete show lead for Daisey.
I think she will look stunning in it.
what do you guys think?

You don't see many Cocker people using half-check show leads to be honest. Will the collar part expand enough so you can place it well behind the shoulders when standing your puppy? If it doesn't, you may be better off getting one like Sarah & Michelle recommend ;)

when i comes to leather the best thing is neatsfoot oil.
I worked with horses most of my adult life and as you know there is lots of leather there.
Make you neatsfoot oil room temp then just brush it on with a pastry brush and keep going till it wont absorb anymore. Then leave it in a warm room for 12-24 hours to soak it all in before applying saddle soap if needed, you shouldn't need to though.
