Aimee's Puppies
« on: September 02, 2006, 01:03:36 PM »
Hi folks, advice needed please!Aimee had 6 puppies four weeks ago ,as some of you know.
Unfortunately on Monday she developed mastitis, she went to the vets and was given an antibiotic injection which worked well. She is now on tablet form,do you think it would be harmful to the puppies for her to feed them she is desperate to get to them and is pining, she still has plenty of milk.

If dogs are like humans then it is fine.  :-\
I had mastitis and took anti biotics, but was told to carry on feeding as normal. It actually helps because it keeps draining the milk.

Thanks Rhona that's what I thought, better confirm it with the vet though!,it's just that most breeders are more knowledgable than the vets :005:

Usually, it depends on how severe the mastitis is as to whether the pups should continue to feed from Mum. Your vet will have given an antibiotic which is safe for puppies (Synulox?) but remember they will be ingesting it with the milk so it might be a good idea to give some probiotics to Mum & pups (once the course is finished) to top up the good bacteria

Most puppies won't feed from a bitch who has mastitis if it is in all glands. If it is only in a few, then the common antibiotics given to bitches for mastitis i.e synulox, noroclav, amoxycillin, are all safe for puppies whether given direct or through the milk.
