Stupid Question - Probably!!
« on: January 20, 2008, 10:06:04 AM »
This may just sound really stupid when I type it up but its got me curious.....

We were out with our 7 month old puppy yesterday walking through Southport looking in shops etc and Poppy (golden show type) was loving getting lots of attention from passers by (she knows how to work a crowd  :005: :luv:)

This is a bit garbled as OH cant remember exactly what the chap said but it went something like this.....

I was in a shop and OH had Poppy and this man came over and OH thought he said "she's a red setter"  so Oh was saying "no no she's a cocker spaniel" and the man said "no I did not mean she is a red setter I know she is a cocker spaniel but she is xxx (Oh cant remember what he said - DOH) which has a sort of red setter strain in them which gives them this really pretty face".

ME and OH are first time dog owners let alone knowing anything about cocker spaniels (Learning fast!) so was just wandering if there is anything in this or was this bloke just talking rubbish - tried googling but nothing came up so I'm suspecting this is just a load of rubbish and therefore a STUPID QUESTION  :005: Feels very STUPID  ph34r but I'm always one to ask the daft questions!!

Have to say that it sound pretty ridiculous to me but just thought I would ask....

Could the man have been referring to a particular line of show cockers?  Well established lines have quite distinctive appearances - and he may be familiar with a particular line of goldens/solids that have a particular shape of head/face  ;)

(alternatively, he may have been completely deluded  :005:)

I've also read somewhere that red setters were used to help get the red colouration in cockers, they also imported american dogs - they had had more success with the red colour, Robinhurst of Ware was imported from America in the 1920s to set the red colour in this country.

Me too, one guy actually tried to convince me that she was a setter cross or that one of her parents had to be a setter cross  Laurë has some worker in her so her body type and coat is different from the show type cockers people are used to seing. But a 15" tall setter mix  :shades: I have her pedigree so I know she's a cocker, so I just smiled and let him continue his setter theories.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies!  I was thinking along the same lines as cob-web in that I thought he was referring to some sort of particular line of show cocker's but OH insists that he kept mentioning red setters!!

Thanks for your response Spaniel Girl - reading up about the history of the breed is something that I have not done (having a puppy I skipped straight to the house training & Socialisation sections of the books  :005:) but I find the history of things quite interesting so I'll get the books out and start having a look....

Perhaps he was just one of these deluded know it all (know nothings!) We have already met a few of them already - out in Liverpool yesterday this man just came up to me and said "you'l have nothing but vets bills...." Why do people feel they need to tell you thier opinion on life when your just stood thier minding your own business - mind you another lady said that we could be models for the cover of country life - which made me laugh even more as we were in the Middle of Liverpool city centre!  :005: :005:

Yup, here's my "Irish Setter Puppy":

I cannot even begin to count the many times I have heard that comment  ph34r

That's interesting, never heard of that before!

By the way, Amanda, Jerry soo looked like Poppy as a puppy  :luv: :luv:

Some one tried to convince me that one of my portraits was of a setter. It was definatly a cocker!!!

I should know - i own 5!

Gypsi thinks she is a doberman - but that has nothing to do with what she looks like - just an over aspireing black cockers imagination!

Sorry if my Post offends you, my cocker spaniel has learnt to type and i can not be held responsible for her attitude problem!

Nuffi, your puppy really doesn't look like a setter. Peaople might say that because of the undocked tail they are not used to yet ?

Some one reported to me once that they had had a call from a vet saying that their Gordon Setters were being bred too small, and that they should stop breeding them and selling them or they would be reported for farming. Very Irate and upset Vet had just examined a black and Tan Cocker  :005: I wouldn't be surprised if the man was just clueless!!!

Hmmm, yes, you're probably right! Undocked cockers are kind of unheard of here in the States  :-\
