Pedigree question
« on: August 04, 2010, 06:55:43 PM »
Just dug out my dog's five gen pedigree certificate and noticed that the grandad on the mother's side is the same as the great grandad on the father's side.  Is that normally a problem.

We have no probs with our dog, but obviously with humans that wouldn't be a good sign?

Still, wouldn't change him for the world  :D

Be interesting to know from people who know more about this stuff though.

Thanks,
Claire

It's not uncommon, and to actually only have one repeat, coming from different sides of the pedigree, is much better than a lot of pedigrees....

It's generally closer matings that are more problematic....  in my own family tree there are two cases of cousins marrying... a closer (and pefectly legal even for humans!) relationship than the one you are describing!  ;)

Not sure about cockers but in golden retrievers it is quite common especially if you want to breed to type of a particular line. The important thing is that it is not too close.
