Adding oil to your dogs food?
« on: November 27, 2011, 02:15:54 PM »
What if any oil supplements do you give to your and why. The reason I am asking is I am thinking of changing the dogs to a different brand and wonder if a should also start adding some supplements.

Fish4dogs salmon oil. Because it makes me feel I'm doing the best for my dogs. I don't actually believe the dogs are any better for it  ph34r

Giving Cod Liver Oil can result in excess levels of Vitamin A, which can be detrimental.
A whole fish oil is better, though should be given with Vitamin E to aid absorbtion...

TBH I don't give Honey any, but when we switched to raw, I did look into a lot of the options for supplements....  ;)

We give fish4dogs salmon oil. Willow was changed on to royal canin sensitivity food after sloppy stools and I notice along with it came a not so shiny coat and a bit of dandruff. She loves the salmon oil, no dry skin and she coat shines like mad  ;) Its £4 for a samll bottle but you only have to add one teaspoon a day the bottle weve got has lasted forever  :D

Salmon oil for my "normal" dogs and flax seed oil for my dogs with allergies.

We started giving Barney Yumega after he had "the op" as his coat was getting really dry.  After about 2 weeks on Yumega several people had commented on how good his coat was looking even though we hadn't mentioned that we were using the oil.   :D  His groomer was particularly impressed.

I've been adding Yumega Plus to Maisie's food for months now. It was originally because she had itchy skin. I'm not religious about it but generally she gets it about three/four times a week.  She was at the vets a week or so ago and the vet  commented on how shiny her coat was.... I was like a proud mother :005:!! It might be nothing to do with the oil but I'm sure her coat wasn't as shiny before we added it and the itchiness has vanished too luckily.

I always add fish oil to all my dogs' diet.  We use human grade fish oil supplements making sure they are 100% fish oil with no soy added and checking for EPA/DHA levels.  It's the same thing as oil supplements targeted for dogs, but so much cheaper - something that's of great importance for us with a household of four dogs.  The dogs also get a meal of salmon usually twice a week.

I believe Yumega primarily uses flax to obtain its omega 3's, and dogs cannot process the oils from plant materials as easily as they can from fish. Not saying that they can't, but it's a much more inefficient and you probably don't get near as much the benefit from the same amount of fish oil.

I'm not nearly as interested in skin and coat condition as I am in the possible cardiovascular, anti-inflammatory, and neurological benefits dogs can receive from consuming omega 3s.

I've just started giving Sherlock tinned pilchards once a week - do you think that this would negate the need for fish oil supplements, or is it just not enough? Sherlock's on a raw diet, and I know a lot of other owners supplement with cod liver oil, but I know it's dangerous to over do the supplements...
