Title: Bramble has a swelling - UPDATED AGAIN please read
Post by: jools on November 24, 2007, 09:13:27 PM
I noticed a swelling on Bramble's leg this afternoon (after the vet had closed - typical!) It's just below her knee (?) and isn't causing her to limp at all.

I cannot see a puncture wound, although she may well have injured her leg running through the woods like a maniac on a daily basis. She doesn't appear to be in any pain at all - but i am worried.

So, oh wise ones.....what do you think it could be?

If it continues not to cause her any discomfort, I'll leave it until Monday before taking her to the vet.

Took The Brambler to the vet today and he has no idea what it is. He has ruled out an infection and is hoping that she has just overdone the squirrel chasing. He did, however mention that if it's not down in a week then he'll have to remove it - and he's worried that it is in a really tricky place.

She's had Metacam injection and is to take the suspension for the next 7 days. She is also to have complete rest - that should be fun!

Please send my baby positive thoughts. I am fearing the worst.....she really is so precious.

Have no idea, as it could be so many possibilities.   She may have just banged her leg in the woods.

Hope it's nothing and causes no trouble

Certainly! We can't do these things during business hours, can we?!  >:( :005:

oh blimey Jools...sorry, you know I'm a bit busy at the mo ;)

I was meaning to text ya and suggest histiocytoma, but I would have thought the vet would've realised if it was! I wonder what it is. Hope she's ok..and you  :-*

Poor Bramble :(  I hope the rest and anti-inflams help - you could also try rubbing some rescue remedy into the area; it will be absorbed by the skin and can't do any harm  ;)

Just back from the vet. Her skin was red and inflamed last night, which I was pretty relieved at coz that would suggest an infection rather than something more sinister.

I phoned the vet and he wanted to take a look at her this morning.

He thinks the "mass"  is moving down her leg a bit and is smaller and a bit softer. He admitted thoday that he initially thought it might be a tumor, but said that even if it was, it should be much easier to cut out based on how it looks today.

He is pretty sure now that it is an infection - although still no sign of an entry wound and I am worried that a foreign body might be in there still.

So, she's on antibiotics now, which I hope will fix her.

Poppy is missing her on our walks, and when I take Bramble to the vet, I can hear Poppy howling at being left in the house. I knew they were close, you don't realise just how close until something like this happens.

Hope that the anti b's work quickly and your girlie is back on form soon.

I have the same problem with Milo and Nance. I have been at the vets once a week for the past 5 weeks with Milo and there is no way on earth I could leave Nancy in without him, gawd I tried that once and she had screaming ab dabs, started trying to break through the gate crying howling, so now if Milo goes, Nancy goes, which can be a mission if I have Lily as well ::) :005:

Exactly what I thought when reading this ph34r...not to put the frightners on but our vet said that he had a springer whom had a seed go in the paw and came out of the shoulder...after two operations....and you very often will not see the entry site...unfortutely it is hard to find these things on x-ray >:(....if Fenn had had a tube down the throat job then we may have caught her seed 3 months early but the first vet thought it was just an infection?

Not really sure what else the vet could do though?  is she running a temperature?
Title: Re: Bramble has a swelling - UPDATED...worried!
Post by: jools on November 29, 2007, 04:55:39 PM
She's not running a temperature, but the vet said that infections don't always present with high temperatures.

She had a grass seed in her paw (between her toes) earlier this year....they couldn't find the damn thing when they opened her paw up....oh, god.....I've just had a thought....could it be the same bloody seed that's migrated up her leg  :o???

Brammie says thank you to everyone for their good wishes. She is obviously well aware of the worry she is causing and is milking it to the extreme. She stole a fairy cake from the work top tonight right from under my very nose. I didn't tell her off coz she's not well.  :005:

The more I think about it, the more convinced I am that this is the grass seed they couldn't find in her paw back in July. I hope I'm wrong....but in another way, I hope I'm right coz grass seed sounds better that tumour  :o

Title: Re: Bramble has a swelling - UPDATED...worried!
Post by: fenn2006 on December 03, 2007, 10:24:12 AM
Hi Jules - I would definitely be thinking along the lines of it being the grass seed that could not be found in July.....I know this may seem daft but isn't there something beginning with 'M' that if put on the skin draws things?...if this seed is near to the skin surface maybe this would help? Just a thought?

Hope you get to the bottom of things soon xx
Title: Re: Bramble has a swelling - UPDATED...worried!
Post by: Helen on December 03, 2007, 10:29:55 AM
any news on bramble?  You could dose her with homeopathic silica - if it is a seed it may help the body eliminate it (and it won't interfere with any anti-b's etc...)

hoping all is well and it's clearing up  :-*

Title: Re: Bramble has a swelling - UPDATED...worried!
Post by: jools on December 03, 2007, 10:31:45 AM
not sure what the M thing is....perhaps someone else knows??? The swelling has gone down a lot, but it's still there. I think the antibiotics are dealing with the infection, but i am still convinced it's the grass seed they couldn't find back in July.

She's back at the vet on Thursday and I am deffo going to ask him to take her in to investigate.

I remember thinking back in July "well, if they can't find it.....where the hell has it gone?"
Title: Re: Bramble has a swelling - UPDATED...worried!
Post by: fenn2006 on December 03, 2007, 10:38:08 AM
THats the thing, our vet said sometimes, depending on what seed it is, it may travel out on its own or the body disperses it in its own way...he also said this year he has had soooo many dogs (mainly springers and cockers) with seeds that he is usually on the ball with this one now (though I think Fenn opened up a whole new chapter!)...they may just have to look under the surface of the skin and it could be there....

I am racking my brains what it is that draws things.....I know it has been mentioned on her previously....I shall have a search...might not be wise but could be worth mentioning to your vet?

not sure what the M thing is....perhaps someone else knows???

Magnesium Sulphate paste.

It's really mucky stuff though ands would involve a bandage/dressing. Also, I think it would be most effective if there was some indication of "pointing" (the lump coming to a head!)

I think it probably is that grass seed. Do tell them on Thursday, and don't let them try to fob you off or ake you feel silly for thinking that. You could well be right!

Title: Re: Bramble has a swelling - UPDATED AGAIN
Post by: jools on December 06, 2007, 11:02:28 AM
Took The Brambler back to see the vet this morning. The swelling has gone down a lot - but not completely away. I spoke to him about the possibility that it could be the grass seed they couldn't find back in July. He thinks it could be.

Anyway, the plan of action is this: we're leaving her another week, this time with no medication. The paw is causing her absolutely no problem at all. He thinks that if it is a foreign body, the swelling will increase.

I am happy to leave her another week, mainly because the poor soul hasn't been able to go a walk for almost 2 weeks now. He wants me to treat her as normal....so she can have big walks again.

So, that's it...the news is....no news, really. The important thing is that he is sure that she's not got a tumour.

We'll keep you posted.

Jools, try the homeopathic silica - what have you got to lose?  if it is a grass seed the silica can help draw it out from the body, if it's not a foreign body the silica won't harm her in any way.

Poor Brammie, I hope the silica does the trick, it does sound like the seed is the most likely culprit. Animalintex is another good poultice type thing, I've used it on the horses and dogs in the past. It comes as a bandage type dressing so it's easy to use.

I want to say a HUGE thank you to Helen for suggesting Silica for Brammie's paw. I got said silica from my local pharmacy on Thursday evening and within 12 hours of her first dose the swelling on her paw came to a head and burst.

She had 3 tablets for 3 days and I washed and bandaged the wound daily.

Today, a MASSIVE grass seed came out of her paw.

I am just back from the vet. he cannot believe the difference in her paw. She has a buster collar and he's given her an antibiotic to clear up to wound.

So, it looks like Bramble will not have to have an operation; which is great news.

If you suspect your dog has a grass seed, please please, please get hold of some silica tablets and try them. Please tell your friends with dogs about them. Both Bramble and Poppy had ops for grass seeds this year.....if I'd known about this stuff, it may never have had to happen.

I really hope so Rachel. He was genuinely interested in finding out more about silica.  He's a really nice guy; his dad owns the group of practices....he didn't even mind when I called him out on a Friday night to attend to an injured ferret I'd found on the road a few years ago  :005: .

I am SOOOOOOO pleased about the grass seed coming out Jools. What a relief  :D

Sorry if I came across anti-vet - I'm truly not, I firmly respect and admire vets and the work they do but I'm also really open to complementary medicine - especially in this case where it would not interfere with any of the treatments Bramble was getting from the vet.

Your vet sounds really nice Jools, I bet he does read up on silica and a few other homeo remedies for dogs to boot ;)

Impossible to say if it would have helped - but at least Fenn's better now, and that's the main thing.

Michele's updated the info sticky on grass seeds to include a bit about silica. Hopefully it'll be a help to people next year when the seed season starts again.
