KC registration
« on: August 03, 2014, 08:20:56 AM »
What are the KC implications of a breeder using a KC stud and a bitch with no papers? I think this has been to introduce the colour sable which seems to be very rare.  Can the pups be KC registered if the bitch isn't?  If not KC reg then why would a breeder do this?

I have a feeling that both parents need to be KC registered for any of the pups to be so, Pups are usually registered within a certain time by the breeder and then new owners change the pup into their name/s with the 'change of ownership' form that is given to new owners by the breeder.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge can you give a more detailed explanation.

Yes both parents need to be KC registered before a litter can be KC registered. Sable is far from rare though- there are many commercial breeders producing this colour even though it is a non standard colour so doubt that would be a valid reason for breeding from a bitch with no papers. No reputable breeder would breed from a bitch with no papers - there would be no reason to do so.

There are lots of reasons why a dog/bitch may not be KC registered but they usually imply something is not quite right - eg one of the parents had KC endorsements on their registration (preventing registration of puppies) or the mother was too old/too young/had had too many litters for further progeny to be registered. Some breeders also don't register all their litters so they can hide how many litters they have from the authorities (local authorities and the inland revenue use KC records to track breeder activity). If one of the parents is non KC registered, it is also very difficult to check on their health test results - all KC registered dogs can be checked online via the MyKC website but there is no way of checking out unregistered dogs.

Thanks for the info.  Suspected that all was not quite right.
