I thought Jethro was just feeling sorry for himself, but he's really under the weather now. He's not eating his food and is barley drinking. he has been eating the scrambled egg and cottage cheese I've been giving him for tea, to get something into him. He's a bit runny nosed and is still playing in small amounts.
Could it be just a cold? &do i need to worry and take him to the vets? Also how can i get more fluids down him?

Aww poor Jethro, I would take him to the vet to be on the safe side.
Let us know how he goes.
-
thanks jane, going to try getting some fluids in him and see if they have an appointment, got a feeling it will be monday with there opening hours.
-
thanks jane, going to try getting some fluids in him and see if they have an appointment, got a feeling it will be monday with there opening hours.
Could you maybe even try some goat milk, might tempt him more than water.
-
Has he pooped anything describable? After my nasty experience Rouge Coco's double whammy, if there is any bright red blood, get to the vet same day.
I wouldn't worry too much about food if he doesn't want it, but another tip for fluids is to use a large syringe, and squirt into the back corner of the jaw.
-
Poor Jethro. :luv: i would call the vet and try to get an appointment as he's not drinking. You could boil up some chicken and offer him the stock from that. It might tempt him more than plain water. Hope he is feeling better soon.
-
I would take him to the Vets, certainly if it's been more than a day or so. Sounds like he could be running a temperature which can affect their appetite and enegy. Best to have it checked out.
-
Sorry to read Jethro is not well, would agree with the others re the vet. Also you could try boiling some white fish and tempting him with the stock. a vet advised me some years ago to dissolve a little bit of sugar in some boiling water and cooled down.
-
Definitely the vet if you are at all concerned about it. I wouldn't worry too much if he is just off his food, but water is vital and it is concerning that he is not drinking either. Good luck.
-
he's normally drinks about a bowl a day. He's had a cats bowl worth today of milk. Was just wondering if a syringe or sports bottle might get some down him. He's poo's seem fairly normal if not a little on the loose side. Was thinking of getting him some raw feed to try and tempt him. just trying stock down him & while Simon sees if vets can squeeze him in today.
Thanks for the tips. (stocks getting a few licks down)
-
ice cubes not having much interest shown. Got an appointment for 2.50. although the monkeys decided to have a few licks just to be awkward.
-
Sat waiting in vets for bloods to come back. He's not dehydrated but is very anemic with a bit of a temperature, vets quiet concerned. Not been given any indication of what's up yet.
-
oh dear, hope your wee fella is better soon. Sending positive thoughts :D
-
He's having to go for a blood transfusion today, it could be a condition or a bone marrow problem. Worrid sick.

OMG! You'll have to keep us up to date when you hear. Poor Jethro, at least he's in the right place. :bigarmhug: for you.

-
Poor Jethro. Fingers and paws crossed here for him.
-
Oh no :'(
Hope you get some answers soon. Big hugs from us. Fingers and paws crossed xx
-
He's in critical condition and been give a 50/50 chance. He's in the right place, they think its Immune mediated haemolytic anaemia. The blood transfusion is buying us some time in the hope that steroids can stop his immune system attacking its self. There hoping its a one off event but unsure. Its going to be days before we know whats happening.
Went thinking he was a little under the weather and now risk loosing my lovely little boy :luv: :'(, he's only a baby. Praying we get some good luck for a change. The house feels so empty.
-
So sorry to hear about Jethro, sending you lots of positive thoughts :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:
-
I'm so sorry to hear he's not well. Sending big :bigarmhug: and pray he makes a speedy recovery.

jamie send licks and gentle cocker hugs :luv:
-
Not the news I was hoping for - it's certainly a shock, I know we all have everything crossed for him. I can't imagine how you are feeling, especially not expecting it to turn out so serious.
Sending all the positive thoughts in the world Jethro's way :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:
-
Gosh, what a shock for you - everything crossed for a full and speedy recovery :bigarmhug:
-
If he can get though this he can have an entire cow! just thought it was an infection, apparently if we had took him yesterday they would have missed it, as levels would have been low enough to ring alarm bells.
-
So sorry to read about Jethro and keeping fingers crossed for him. If it is An auto immune disease it can be controlled so try to keep positive. :bigarmhug:
-
Gosh, so sorry to read this, fingers and paws crossed that he pulls through - what a worry.
Big :bigarmhug: for you all
-
So sorry to hear about Jethro :'(
Like others have said he is in the best place.
Willow had steroid responsive meningitis which too is an Immune mediated disorder where the immune system attacks itself. Its lucky they have been able to recognise what is it straight away. We were not so lucky with willow as our regular vet was away. By the time our vet was back and said shat she thought it was willow couldn't move and was in a very bad way. :'(
She was treated with steroids to suppress her immune system and made a full recovery. We were referred to 'the willows' referral centre in solihull where they specialise in internal medicine. All the tests and treatment were carried out there by a specialist that specialises in immune mediated disorders. They acted quickly.
Paws crossed for a full recovery i feel your pain :'(
-
I heard that diagnosis many years ago with Chloe. Good luck to you and healing thoughts to Jethro xx
-
Hope they manage to sort him out for you. What a worry. Thinking about you.

-

-
I'm really really sorry and shocked to read Jethro is so poorly :-\
There is a forum specifically for immune mediated disorders in dogs called CIMDA - they are a font of knowledge and support so I'd take a look http://cimda.co.uk/smf/ (http://cimda.co.uk/smf/)
In the meantime I'm crossing everything for Jethro and hope that he rallies soon and sending you big :bigarmhug:
-
Can only give best wishes and :bigarmhug:
-
Thanks Helen, we will defiantly have a look when we know what we are dealing with. At the moment i don't think we can face the negatives with the vets only giving us a 50/50 chance.
Times passing very slowly.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts, it means a lot :luv:
-
So shocked to read this, cannot imagine how you are coping :bigarmhug: Fight hard Jethro :luv: lots of healing thoughts for you.
-
My Chloe was in the same place as Jethro with less of a chance and lived happily for another 7 years. Keep strong and if I can help, just shout.
-
Thanks Sheryl

-
Just had an update and he's half way though the transfusion, he's no different to when we took him in so still got a wag in him. The emergency vet has re-done his blood manually which is showing a slightly better reading than the digital at 0.19 rather than 0.11 (normals 0.37). Apparently the sample was visually agglutinating, so its defiantly auto immune. The vet doesn't know what the outcome will be said she's cautiously optimistic. if he's levels improve he may be able to come home and go back in to get bloods done to check if the cells are being killed again. Nothing is certain still but him being no worse at the minute is the best we can hope for.
He's on low dose steroids while he's getting the transfusion and they will be upped when its done.
-
What a worrying time - really hope the transfusion continues to help him x
-
Hope he's home soon
-
Fingers crossed hang on in there young man x

Still thinking of Jethro. :luv: :luv:
-
Hi everyone, just an update for this morning.
They managed to get all the blood transfusion into him. His levels after were 50% but have dropped back down to 46% at last reading. This level is acceptable while were waiting for the steroids to kick in. He has a bit of colour back in him and is being a star taking the drugs no problem. He's eaten every meal put in front of him since the transfusion and is drinking again quiet happily. The vets pleased so far and is hoping one transfusion will buy us enough time, however thinks he can hold out a couple of days if he needs another, after 2 transfusions were really out of chances of it working. The vets still remaining on the very cautiously optimistic side, and he's getting a repeat of his bloods at tea time so we can see how quick he's killing his red cells and if the steroids are starting to kick in, will be a few days before they do properly, just got to hope the attack is slow enough.
He's a lot perkier than yesterday and we got a big WooWoo telling off when we arrived this morning and the bum never stopped wiggling :luv:.
Jethro and us want to thank you all for your support

So pleased for you, and wonderful pics of Jethro! :luv: Keep fighting, little man!! :bigarmhug:
-
So relieved to read your update and see the photos - Jethro is :luv:
Sounds as though you have a great Vet :D
-
Aww so pleased to hear this, bless him, he looks quite perky considering, and just look at his lil red bandage :( big hugs and Keep fighting Jethro :)
-
Remember that if the steroids alone aren't stopping his immune system from destroying the red cells, they can add another drug like Azathioprine or Atopica xx
-
So pleased to read your update :D :D :D
Stay strong Jethro :luv: :luv:
-
What a lovely update :luv: :luv: :luv: Keep fighting Jethro :luv:
-
That is great news - keep going Jethro, we are all rooting for you :luv:
-
Thinking of you all and sending positive thoughts to jethro :luv:
-
What fantastic news. As Willow has had an auto immune disorder I am reading your update with very leaky eyes as I know what you are going through. I can relate to that feeling of them being in doggy hospital whilst they start treatment away from you with your mind wandering, wondering of the worst case and best case scenario.....
I know all dogs are different but willow went from a dog that could hardly stand never mind move and no wag in her tail. To moving around with a waggily tail in a matter of days once a diagnosis was found and steroids given. Keeping everything crossed that Jethro recovers as Wilsy did. Sending you loads more hugs and healing vibes xx
-
Really lovely pics. Keep fighting xx
-
That's brilliant news Bec's :luv: woooooohooo way to go Jethro keep up the good work boy :luv: Phoebe and Mia send very special :-* :-* just for you x x x

Evening Update:
Jethro's red cell count has continued to fall to 37 or 34% can't remember which vet said. She's still very concerned but the steroids seem to be kicking in, the impression we get is this level of decrease is manageable for a couple of days. As there is nothing more they can do other than take his bloods daily, we are being allowed to fetch him home and take him to our own vets tomorrow for his bloods. He's to be on total bed rest but she feels he would be more comfy at home and we will feel a lot better when we can give cuddles. Just off to get him now.
Praying his bloods start picking up.
Becs x

Glad to read you have him home, very much hoping he improves :luv:
-
Im afraid he lasted half an hour at home and we had to take him back in. His jaundice had got worse and his breathing was very laboured. He's back in hospital over night and having a repeat of his bloods now. The vet thinks it maybe because he's over tired and relaxed at home, but we have decided its for the best that he's in the right place for care during the night. He will be transferred to our own vets from the hospital tomorrow. I don't know how we are both going to get though work and a job interview each this week.
In fact his blood have come back while typing. there the same so best news we can hope for. Cant win with him went running though to back of vets wanted to go out & got back in his bed there.
This is one hell of a roller coster and i want to get off now.
-
I am sorry. For what it's worth I think you have done the only thing you could. Doesn't make it any easier for you I know. I hope Jethro has a settled night and that his bloods remain steady. XX

Morning all, thanks for the positive vibes. Jethro was transferred back to our vets this morning as planned. His bloods have remained stable overnight at 34% so he's managed a good 12hours with no decrease. Looks like he managed to sleep so was his bright self this morning. He didn't want to get out of our car to go back into the vets (i remained strong for him, but i tell you my heart was bleeding taking him back in).
The manor of the 2 different vets is very different and struggled getting asked how we were coping financially and what our limit was if he needed another transfusion. Were not really thinking that far ahead and dealing with it as it comes. Also when I'm obviously in a state getting asked by our vet if he bites. I know they need to be blunt but give me chance to get in the door its been a long weekend. (had a little cry on the way back to the car)
As we had to wait i at least got 10minutes cuddles which helps. Going in after work so Simon can see him too. Plan currently is to just keep monitoring his PCV level and hope it starts going up with the steroids. Still can't get over how bright he is for such an ill dog. I think the staff at the hospital have struggled getting him to stop asking to play ball constantly, so our lads still himself.
-
Great to hear that his bloods have remained stable and that he still wants to play with his ball :luv: :luv:
I don't blame you at all for having a little cry after you'd left him at your own vets. Stay strong but remember there's nothing wrong with having a cry when you need one :bigarmhug:
-
Good news, I can only imagine how you are feeling, our thoughts our with you :luv: :luv:
-
Hope Jethro continues to stay strong, and starts to show signs of definte improvement soon. He sounds like a real 'toughie' :luv:.
Thinking of you - doglets being ill and all the attendant pressure and questions can be exhausting and traumatic. Lots of these to you and Simon (and Jethro too) :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:
-
I too hope Jethro continues to stay stable, I guess you are feeling really sensitive I would be too when the vet asked "does he bite"
-
defiantly overly sensitive at the min.
-
Glad to read positive update.
As Elaine says, it's good to cry when you need - my mum always said it is like a safety valve.
-
I have been following this thread from the start. I really feel for you so much. Lets hope Jethro improves day by day. Big hugs and cuddles from Willow and myself.
-

We're all hoping he'll get better every day :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:
-
:bigarmhug: I would have been in tears as well. You have had a lot to deal with in such a very short time. :bigarmhug: I hope Jethro's bloods have stayed steady, thinking of you all :luv:
-
Another evening update:
Jethro is fed up and can't understand why can't come home. He's settled and still his lively self when we were there (only got 10mins with him today). His evening bloods were 34% so we have been stable for the last 24 hours (best news we have had so far). Bloods gone off for haematology testing to see if his bodies started making its own red cells and can give us a better idea of prognosis (one way or another) or any bone marrow involvement.
He's resting and is comfy and wanting to be home as much as we want him.
-
Stable is excellent news. It's better he's fed up and being looked after in the vets for a few days. Plus if he's fed up he's obviously feeling better :shades:
Good boy Jethro, keep up the good work xx
-
Fingers crossed for him. :luv:
-
Keep fighting, brave little Jethro! :luv:
-
Glad he is stable. Keep fighting little chap xx
-

we have managed another night stable and are at 36% so within the normal 10% fluctuation. waiting on the haematology results and if there good they are going to let him home tonight on light wiggling and cuddle duties. Feel that stability at this stage is a hopeful sign.
-
Oh that's good news, I can't imagine what you are going through at the mo. Thinking of you and hoping he will be home with you later today. :bigarmhug:
-
It certainly is and even if he starts to dip, you have the stage of adding another immunosuppressant to the steroids. So much love and luck from us here. It's not easy but you're heading down the right road and that's great news xxx
-
That is gerat news, so pleased to hear that. Steady is a good thing just now. Well done Jethro :bigarmhug:

-
Good boy Jethro, keep it up, we are all rooting for you :luv:
-
Been thinking about you today
Have you been able to bring Jethro home?
-
Well were home, hopefully we can all unwind. We are defiantly all shattered. His bloods have shown he has the very early signs of making his own red blood cells again, so just need to hope they can mature. Bloods are still holding steady at 34-36%. Got to go back in thurs lunch time for another lot of bloods to see where we are. Were loaded up with medication and have the task of trying to keep a cocker quiet (who knew it was possible). Not out the woods but its a good start  :luv:.
A massive thank you to everyone for there positive thoughts and prayers, they have defiantly helped and Jethro is trying his best to get himself into remission.

So glad to read the news he is home. Keep up the good work Jethro.

Well we had a calm night, the boys shattered. He's not got his normal energy levels but is happy in himself and seems to like being home. Tablets are going down well with magic cheese. The in-laws having been on dog sitting and cuddle duty while me and simon both had interviews. They also sat with him a little longer so i could go food shopping. Jethro is still on the pale pink side in the gums and the jaundice seems a little less. Im going to guess from this he is holding steady, were back at the vets tomorrow for his blood to be done again.
Had to Skype my younger sister last night so she could sit and talk to him on the laptop :005:. Jethro was confused at the conversation with her and my parents collies. Who knew dogs can have a chat 150 miles away.
at the minute were basically ticking along hoping for improvements and enjoying time and cuddles together. Jethro however wants to be more active even though he's over tired.
-
Hoping for some good results tomorrow. :luv:
-
OMG just caught up with this and its exactly the same scenario as us a year ago. If you search for Buster you will see my posts and updates. They didn't think Buster would make it and even had the conversation with the vet at Cambridge that nobody wants to have. I wont lie, it has been a struggle but Buster is still here and like his normal self. He is off all medication for the AIHA but last October I knew he wasn't right and was backwards and forwards to the vets. He was eventually again admitted to Cambridge who diagnosed him with Addison's disease, another autoimmune disease which apparently aren't related. Sometimes I felt that I was a paranoid mother but remember you know your dog better than anyone so follow your instincts. If you feel things aren't right, chances are they aren't. Good luck with everything and give Jethro a cuddle from Buster as he knows exactly how he is feeling.
-
Thanks thats really good to hear Busters doing well. Its good to see a few people on here have good outcomes.
-
Glad to hear from you Becs,
Ahh bless him, he sounds like he had plenty of cuddles from everyone, and skyping his buddy :)
Let us know how it goes tomorrow.
-
Let's hope he gets better each day :luv: Good luck for the results tomorrow :luv:
-
Sounds like he is doing well :D
Hope the interviews went well for you and simon.
Who would have thought that Jethro would be into skyping :005:
Paws crossed for more good news tmw. Xx
-
That is much better. Glad he is keen to do more, although not really got the energy. Had a giggle at the Skyping! Poor Jethro, that is a hard one to figure out. Hope you both got on well with your interviews. Positive thoughts for tomorrow's blood results. xx
-
Everything crossed for positive news tomorrow :bigarmhug:
-
Were at 36%, so holding steady. his glands are a bit swollen but we will see how we go. vet wants us to keep an eye and was hoping his levels would be up a little. So we are back in next friday, seems a long time but have to go with what there saying. he has also had his steroids dropped a tad as he was slightly over the max dose for his size.
He's being an imp today and had just stollen a piece of ham and pease pudding wrap. :005: :luv:
Im just hoping things begin to improve.
-
Sounds like positive news, well done :luv:
-
Sounds quite positive Becs, hoping he does improve, least he still has his mischief lol x
-
If he's up to mischief, stealing food, he's clearly on the road to recovery. So pleased for you. Big hugs to you all ~ you deserve it!!! :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: Diana

Such a worrying time for you. Be happy he is bright in himself. I hope you get good news at the next blood test. :bigarmhug:

A week ago today life flipped upside down and we were sat waiting for a blood transfusion. Its been a very tough week and no positive end in sight. The Support from you lovely COL folks and family has kept us all going.
Jethro is frustrated with the house bound, so we had a trip to the shop round the corner and that was enough for him. So hard keeping him calm and happy when he can't play or go for a walk. Ive also found it hard trying to get out and about, the cabin fever has set in. Im watching a film and knitting upstairs just to get a bit of a break for an hour.
Some how my mum has realised its a tough day to and has sent me this:
(http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/s378/ChocolateHero1/livetosee3_zps533789e5.jpg) (http://s1048.photobucket.com/user/ChocolateHero1/media/livetosee3_zps533789e5.jpg.html)
Its fetched a smile to face and sheer determination to get the boy well again.
-
Awwww Bec's it's been a tough old slog on both you and Jethro :luv: but at least he is making progress albeit slowly bless him chin up girl :luv: we are all here for you x x x
-
Aww what a week Becs, its a really good sign though , love the photo lol
-
Thanks for sharing the photo, that gave me a good giggle. You will all be getting cabin fever, only natural. The frustration is hard to deal with, poor wee Jethro doesn't know why he can't bomb about. You have coped amazingly well, so don't give yourself a hard time for having a wee break, you are certainly entitled to it! :bigarmhug:
-
What a week you and Jethro have had, you've come through so much. Keep thinking positively, it must be very hard for you to have some chill out time but you really deserve it :luv:
He's a real fighter, progress is steady which is a good sign.
:bigarmhug: We're all thinking of you :bigarmhug:
-
Keep going all of you. You've had a tough week but a better lest few days
Continued big {{{{hugs}}}} & cocker squishes & snuggles to you all
-
Continued good wishes from us too.
Good idea to have a break sometimes, just to help get your head and heart around what is going on. :bigarmhug:
-
Positive thoughts and wishes from me too, and good to know that Jethro is still hanging in there. What a wonderful boy! :luv:
-
Stay positive, your doing a great job.
-
What a week for you all. You continue to be in our thoughts daily and we are still sending well wishes your way xx
-
Its such a rollercoaster but remember dogs can recover from this. I know of two cockers who recovered from this illness and my own cocker went into remission for several years after developing an autoimmune disease which left her with no platelets. Jethro is young and I so hope he is one of the lucky ones too. :bigarmhug:
-
Stay strong you have all been amazing. As a previous post says Jethro is only young and he seems a real fighter. We are all thinking of you and rooting for Jethro. Sending :bigarmhug: Keep us posted.
-
Managed to push Jethro's tablets back to a more reasonable hour. Yesterday and today he's had a lot more energy around the house. Im not sure as we see him all the time but i think he looks a little better and a bit more pink in his gums (although checking him a dozen times a day). Will now just take his tablets out of your hand, although the cheese follow up probably helps.
-
yessss!
you know Jethro :luv: best,
if you think he's looking better
then he will be ;)
-
That's a great update. I hope he continues to improve.
-
Hope he continues to improve. Well done Jethro for taking your tablets without any fuss :luv:

Great update, glad he is continuing to improve :luv:
-
God to hear things are going in the right direction :luv:
-
Just got back from the vets. Jethro's bloods are at 38% so were on the slow and steady increase. The vets quite please with his progress and may start to reduce his steroids in weeks time. :cool4:
Were allowed short walks again so hopefully that will relieve his frustration at no walks. The barking driving both me and simon up the wall, but he has so much more energy this week and is a lot happier in himself.
On the whole things are looking up :luv:
-
Great news! :D
-
Fab...
give him a big gentle squeeze :luv:

Such good news :D

-
Great news Jethro, you are a tough cookie :005: :luv:
-
Jethro says he wants a cookie now :005: these steroids have turned him into a proper food snaffling cocker. Tried a pavement walk he was having none of it, so shall try again when simon gets in.

Excellent update :luv:
-
Wonderful news, I am so pleased for you all.
-
Jethro did not enjoy his walk and i ended up carrying for half of it and he is blooming heavy at 15kg!! I think I'm going to need a cattle farm for all this steak :005:
-
Awwwww sounds like he is doing well. 😃 Willow was starving with the steroids and when we gave her treats we had to count our fingers afterwards :005:
-
yep definite finger counting here :005:! We are braving a trip down to my parents tonight for the weekend. It will give us a change of scenery and i think hoomans and dogs will be pleased to see Jethro. Haven't been down since Christmas. I wonder if i can talk my mum into the morning drug round so we can have a lay in? ph34r
-
Hope you have a good time. Sounds like it'll do you all good to have a change :D
Maybe you're mum will take pity on you and bring you tea in bed :005:
-
had a lovely weekend and jethro enjoyed himself, wasn't so keen on not been allowed to run round the garden for hours. going to try a short beach walk today.
pleased that we seem to still be improving.
-
Yipee; sounds promising :D
I'm sure you all feel better
for a little change in scenery too.
-
That sounds really promising...onward and upwards young Jethro
-
Pleased he's progressing well
I was told the steroids can deplete their muscle mass so I can imagine its hard for him at the moment especially as he was so unwell recently
-
Jethro is going in the right direction, glad to hear it. :luv:
-
Just an update after the vets today, his bloods have dropped back down to 35% again from 38%. Vets upped his steroids back to the slightly over max dose. He's not too worried as thinks he's just not coped with dropping them down 2 weeks ago. Was saying its a shame we don't have a healthy base line level to go off.
He's still very happy in him self.
-
Hopefully this is just a hiccup and things will continue to improve :bigarmhug:
-
I can understand you are disappointed, I hope things pick back up again, really soon.
-
Just a small set back, he's a real little fighter and with his increased steroids hopefully things will be back on the right track :luv:
