Oliver has gone, I have lost my best mate tonight

Poor lad woke me at five AM this morning, his breathing was rather laboured and he was shaking. He seemed to rally after about an hour and got up to head for the bedroom door. I got up with him and carried him downstairs but when i put him down he could hardly stand up and his balance was all over the place.
He has been in his bed all day and is still not with it although he has got up and taken himself out on a couple of occasions and had a drink and a wee.
Had a small handfull of warm chicken breast tonight but is really not fussed.
Just have to see how it goes, but at times like this i can feel my heart breaking.
He is my first cocker and that just makes him so special to me....
I've been here before with him so i know there is still a chance of him pulling through again.

why do we so fall in love with our dogs?

Because we give back to them what they give us.  We could protect ourselves from the ultimate pain by keeping our distance and our feelings in check - but it would be at the expense of all the joy too. It is absolute hell when you realise you can't be together with your dog for ever but it is so good to know that you lived your time together as richly as possible.  I hope so much that Oliver pulls round from this to give you more happy days.  Thinking of you all.

Annie wrote pretty much what I was about to.. I really know where you are right now and it's that bad because it's been so so good It's very clear what Oliver means to you and I'm hoping and hoping this is just another little turn and he'll be ok again soon
