Fruit & Veg
« on: April 19, 2007, 10:32:31 AM »
Hi,

I remember reading on here that grapes are poisonous for dogs.

Are they any other fruits/Veg that I should avoid feeding Rosie. She has taken to sticking her nose in my bowls of friut salad. When i am preparing these she goes mad, jumping up and barking, as if to say "Feed me Feed me" >:D
 Thanks

No onions either.  Fruit, apart from grapes, is all ok as far as I know - mine share my fruit salad most mornings !

Have to say that muppet eats both onions (and garlic) and apples, always has done and is absolutely fine.  Either that or she has an iron constitution!, Grapes definately are poisionous and their for also raisons, sultanas etc and of course chocolate!

the apple pips are toxic, not the apple itself. You would have to feed quite a few for it to have a damaging effect though.

Onions are toxic and can cause anaemia. Although garlic in small quantities is used as a natural pesticide against fleas/tick infestation, in large quantities it can have the same effect as onion.

I agree about the chocolate, raisins sultanas and currants. All toxic to dogs

So strawberries are OK then?
Max got very excited when I was chopping some recently, but I'm cautious of what he has & I didnt have time to check on COL (so I ate them all  :005:)

As a pup Milo was given a pickled onion by a stuuuuuupid family member >:(

I called the vet and they were concerned enough to ask me to bring him in ;) So I wouldn't be giving mine onions knowingly I have to say. That episode scared the life out of me

Raw potatoes aren't a good thing either ;) So make sure they are packed awa in a cupboard the doggies can't get too

She thought it was great

Thought I read that raw potato skins were poisonous but if peeled safe to give? I minced some the first time I made my veggy mash but haven't since in case I was wrong.

I wouldn't personally feed potato although I know some here do, but I think they feed cooked anyway and don't think it is fed regularly.
Potatoes are of the same family as tomatoes, onion, garlic, chives, peppers and aubergine (Nightshade family). I prefer to avoid them all just to be on the safe side.

I don't feed potatoes or onions although Coco does have garlic in her veg mix and treats to prevent fleas and ticks  ;)  I wouldn't give her grapes but I would give her pretty much anything else I can get her to eat - she is a bit of a fussf*rt when it comes to eating her fruit and veg so I usually have to hide them in her dinner  ::)  She did like melon out of the fridge last summer though  ;)

;) Flo loves all fruits, she shares mine every day, particularly loves banana apple and strawberries, but I don't give her grapes,
also most veg but not onions and raw potato. I use veg, particularly carrot as treats a lot too !
