What do you feed your cockers?
« on: January 09, 2007, 07:55:10 PM »
Hello everyone

What food do you feed your cockers? Do you feed them dry food or tinned food?

Fern is fed neither. I feed BARF ('Biologically Appropriate Raw Food' or 'Bones and Raw Food') Raw meat, raw meaty bones, raw fruit and veg, no cereals or carbohydrates or additives ;). There are plenty of threads on it here if you do a search on 'BARF'.
I fed all my past dogs including her up to a couple of months ago on tinned and mixer , but I'd never return to it now!

Do you not need a really big fridge / freezer to BARF feed?  Where do you get your bones / meat?  What do you do when you go away, do you take bones with you?  20 questions I know (well 3 but you get the point) I am just interested.

Letichia, Muppet is on High Oats Burns, carrots, brocoli and actimel.

I got a BARF chest-freezer for Christmas

We did manage with a drawer of the upright freezer for a while - but I often found myself *running out* before I managed to go shopping  ph34r
It also depends what type of meat you decide to feed - you can buy a totally balanced BARF diet from your local supermarket, so may not need a freezer at all  ;) I buy from a local butcher who sells wild game and local, free-range meat; so prefer to buy in bulk as it is cheaper and is sold in "bulk" (5 kg bones/mince)  ph34r

We don't ask the kennels we use to feed raw, so Molo has Burns then; and when we went away at Christmas, I took Burns as I wasn't able to find a suitable butcher  ;)

I've got a small chest freezer and it's a tight squeeze with our food too, but there are only two of us. Many people here who feed BARF do have a separate freezer. I buy AMP frozen mince from the pet shop. Whizz my own veggies and freeze them in portions and get chicken wings from the supermarket. I don't go away so no problem there, but if I did I know she would happily wolf down Chum/Pal/Chappie/mixer. I am lucky that she is not a fussy feeder.
These threads may help to explain more. I picked a few at random. There are plenty more if you do a search  ;)

Since we got the chest freezer, we've had the opposite problem; I keep going back to the butcher to stock it up (you can get a lot of food into 175 litres), and I have even done an Iceland shop to fill it up and keep it running economically  :005:

I feed Alfie BARF so he has a mixture of Forthglade frozen mince, raw meaty bones, half rabbit carcasses, chicken wings, lamb ribs, offal, fish, eggs and vegetables.

Tilly however is a fussy wee madam and other than the eggs and sardines resolutely refuses to touch any of the stuff that I give Alfie so she is on Autarky which is holistic dry food formulated for working dogs. She loves it and a couple of times a week she gets sardines, eggs and veg as well.

4 of mine are fed Arden Grange dried food and the pup is on pedigree chum pouches but I'm about to put them all onto the AMP frozen minced packs and chicken wings  once I work out how many packs I would need in a month for 5 dogs  :o

Parker has the following:
Breakfast - 1/2 sachet of Minced Morsel things (can't remember their name!) and some Winalot Small Bite Mixer Biscuits
Supper - 1/2 tin Winalot and mixer biccies

Mrs Bridges has the following:
Breakfast - 1/2 cup of Burns dry food (soaked in warm water for a couple of mins!)
Supper - 1 cup of Burns dry food

Ronald (not a cocker, but never mind!) has the following:
Breakfast - 1/2 tin Winalot & mixer biccies
Supper - 1 tin Winalot & mixer biccies.

Quite a performance organising them all but they are happy on it!  ph34r

I would say about 155 packs of 400g rabbit/turkey/tripe blocks or 31 x 2Kg packs of freeflow mince will cover it with a bit over Gill  :D .

Dave started on Iams but I thought it looked boring so I changed to Bakers puppy complete- much more interesting looking. He also has some Pedigree pouches which work out quite expensive but he loves them. Then he has liver cake for treats. That certainly stinks the house out when I make it :D
