Title: homemade treats
Post by: Deja_14 on April 05, 2016, 05:30:04 PM
Sure it's been asked before but does anyone have some easy, simple recipes for dog treats I can make myself at home

Thanks in advance!  :D

I make a very quick and easy sardine bread for training treats.

1 small tin sardines in oil, drained and mashed
1 egg, beaten
Enough flour to mix with the sardines and egg to make a stiff dough

Spread on to a microwaveable plate and microwave for about 3 minutes.

Cut into pieces when cooled. I use scissors to cut it up because it's easier than a knife.

Keeps in the fridge for a few days and can be frozen.

Chatting to a friend whose dog has wheat allergy and she makes liver cake with liver put in a food processor with raw egg and potato flakes (for mash get Smash) then baked.  It doesnt rise as much as normal liver cake, but allergy free for her dog.

Our two love it . We slice the liver so it's about 10mm thick, spread it out on a tray and cook it long and slow until it's half the thickness and quite hard.

Bob.

I do dried liver, which mine love. The drawback is you might get followed by other dogs on you walk  :005:

I've not tried it but saw it on the Alan Davies rescue programme with Lesley Waters. She cut chicken breast into really thin strips and cooked them like the liver in a very slow oven until it's a jerky consistency.

I made some sardine oatcakes for Blue this afternoon, using this recipe, with a couple of adaptations.

I only had spelt flour and sardines in tomato sauce in my cupboard, so I used those and substituted a big spoon of mixed dried herbs for  the garlic.  Instead of water, I used two beaten eggs to bind the mixture, rolled out thinly and cut to the size of a £2 coin, and grated a smidgen of cheddar cheese over the biscuits before baking until brown.  It made about 130 small biscuits, Blue has gone absolutely wild for them!
