:D Hi - lovely to be here!  Just joined up having been recommended this site by my breeder down in Deanshanger.  Collecting our first ever puppy - a beautiful black male called Woody - on Saturday and very excited.  Looking forward to logging on and picking up advice and news.

Hi Lizzy!  Lovely to have a reply!  I take it that Molly and Evie are your babies?!

Am SO excited about Woody you wouldn't believe!  Have been planning to get a dog for a couple of years but the time was never quite right.  I gave up work and now we have a new house with plenty of room, it's definitely time!  Just need to break it to our two cats, Poppy and Pepper, that they have a brother joining them ....!!  How old are your two?  What's your golden tip for having a happy Cocker?

Hello again!

Yes Molly is my blue roan, she's two and a half and Evie is my choc and tan who's 19 weeks and a real little handful! I also have a ginger tom called Tigger.

I would'nt worry to much about introducing your cats to  Woody, if you are going to crate train Woody you could let them meet him whilst he's in his crate , so they can see him and get the cut of his jib! The cats will soon put him in his place! But until the cats are used to him don't leave them alone as cats can do damage to little eyes

As regards to how to have a happy cocker I'm sure you'll do everything you can so that Woody grows into a gorgeous litttle chap, all I can say is that be consistant with him, take him to a good training class , let him meet all sorts of different people, animals , traffic, noises etc ( from day one) and give him all the love in the world and he will repay you a million times over! 8)  :D

If you need any advice there's lots of friendly people on  COL to help!!!

Well I'm not getting much sleep at the moment because I'm too excited!

Yes Lizzy we are crate training him - taking advice of our breeder with this one and will let the cats and Woody find their own way with gentle supervision.  Also allowing the cats full run of the house (and our bed) and keeping Woody downstairs.  Hopefully things won't be too frantic!

Tracey - we may very well meet up!  We're doing "dogless" walks at the moment to check out the area as we only moved to Birmingham last October - but having a dog should be a good way of helping to make new friends!  As soon as Woody can be walked (we've been advised not to walk him too far for the first six months) we'll be out there!  But until he's big enough, we'll take him to Cannon Hill Park to play ball and meet the ducks!

Thanks for the warm welcome to the Forum everyone!!!   8)

Welcome to COL Jo and Woody (http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0304/aktion/action-smiley-030.gif)

We have a one year old blue roan called Piper.  We also have three cats, Lillie, William and Tickles and despite their initial disgust in having a doggie sister, they all get on just fine now (well kind of..... )

I can't get over how many replies have had!  What a friendly bunch you all are!!  Will take some pictures of Woody over the weekend and attempt to put them on this site.

We are very lucky to have such a great breeder - she rang today to ensure that she knew exactly which puppy Woody was because another couple are coming for their black male puppy on the same morning.  I thought that was really kind of her.  She agreed that we've chosen the most beautiful dog in the litter!

Enjoying our last evenings of freedom by going to see Harry Potter tonight - can't see us getting out for quite a few weeks to come!

Hi Andrea!

We've got more common than you might think!  I was brought up in Devon - Exeter - and so know Plymouth well!

How is Silas fitting in?  How are you coping?  How did your first night go?  So many questions!!  Let me know how it's all going and if there's anything you can recommend that I do or don't do for Woody!

Hi Jo

How exciting for you :D

The waiting is definitely the worse bit!  We knew that our breeder's bitch was pregnant and then we had a three week wait until the birth and then 8 more weeks until we can take our puppy home!

What are you hoping for?  Colour?  Dog or bitch?  Have you had a Cocker before?

Hi Joe

We have a blue roan dog earmarked for us. We wont be able to "choose" as we are the last on the list but I dont care as long as hes fit and healthy  as Im sure it will be love on first sight  :D

This will be our second. We lost Gunnar to a heart tumour two months ago. He was a solid black and in my eyes the bee's knees.

So although Ive been through the new puppy bit before, it was a long time ago and I think because I have done it once before Im more excited this time. The sleepless nights, getting up at unearthly hours, the chewed shoes - all worth it.

Keep us all posted with how its going

Mmm - I  keep hearing about this sleepless night thing!  Isn't it best to leave the pup as long as he's not overly distressed?  Aren't you supposed to break the psychological response of "if I cry, Mummy will come running"?

Yep thats the way its " supposed" to happen

Once they start whining it takes a strong wo/man to be able to sleep through it :)

Hi Jo, Welcome to COL.  We're looking forward to seeing pictures of Woody.  Tilly is a black cocker too (sorry, that sounds like a black cockatoo!) and she is always on the lookout for a good looking boy  !

Judging by that lovely picture of Tilly, she could eat Woody for lunch!!!  I'll let you know how handsome he is and whether he's into girls.  We had a friend with a gay Weinerama (can't spell it!) and boy did that make for interesting dog walks!!!

hi Jo
Silas has settled in amazingly well :D Both nights there has been only a token resistanceof a few minutes before giving up and going to sleep!! (Still waiting for' normal ' night time noise to kick in :? ) He hasn't eaten very much since he's ben here, I think all this new found freedom and loads of new sights and smells are more important at the moment. We have had three and a half dog-less years while waiting for the kids to grow up a bit and it's great to have a dog around again(wees poos and all!! )Let us know how Woody settles in.We can have "how many hours sleep did you get last night?"competitions!!! :D  :D

Hello again Andrea!

Will definitely keep you up to date with Woody's progress.  I do like the name Silas - how did you come up with that?  Good to hear he's settled in so well and I bet the kids love him to bits too!  Woody is our child substitute!  We made the decision not to go down the child route but I'm wondering whether having a puppy will make me feel maternal.  It is very strange being the only married girl I know in her 30s with no children.  Are your kids going to do their share of caring for Silas (like walking him/cleaing up after him?)

Welcome and good luck for today with collecting your new pup.

I hope everything goes really well for you.

We have had our little one home for 6 days now and it is going great.
It feels like she has been with us for ages.
Let's see some piccies as soon as you are able to post :D

Well Woody is here!!   He's had a really full day and we are so proud of him and how he has coped.  The worst thing was leaving Lin, his breeder, who always gets upset when one of her "babies" leaves the nest!  Woody loved the car and was only a tiny bit sick about two minutes before we got to the house.  He's had three good meals, played outside - pulled up a few of my plants!! - done all but one of his businesses in the garden and played and played and played.   It's bedtime now and we're turning in early because we're expecting a different sort of dawn chorus!!!

One question - why does he like to take his toys and hide them in the garden?  Is this a gundog trait?

Will post some pictures tomorrow but could somebody tell me when exactly a Cocker puppy sits still long enough for a photo?!?!   :D

Good Luck with tonight, I hope he sleeps well. :D

I can't wait to see some piccies, but I agree, it is very difficult catching pups when they are still. Maybe you can catch one of him when he is asleep

Welcome  home Woody  :)

Its sounds like you had a really wonderful day today Jo. Hope you are getting loads of rest right now

The toy thing? Gunnar done that when he was young as well. Done it with any treats as well. We put it down to him "hiding" them away from the rest of the "pack" Quite funny watching him try to "bury" things in the carpet    He soon stopped it in the house put carried it on when he was out in the park for ages. Give him a treat when trying to train him and off he went to bury it and any ball thrown for him,he swiftly ran off to hide it under a bush. Guess its a cocker thing :)

Enjoy it all and look forward to the piccies

Hi Andrea!!

Well we all went to bed last night at around 10.00pm - I don't know who was more exhausted!  :)  We put Woody in his little pen and I think I heard him murmur a bit around 1am but nothing much - my husband slept soundly as ever!  At 4.30am however it was a different story - awful crying - pitiful - so I went down and took him outside but he didn't want the toilet.  I cleaned up his pen (where he'd been three times on the paper - good boy! :D ) and then settled him down.  He cried hideously for about 45 mins and then slept again until 6.30.  At which point I kicked husband out of bed to go and make Woody some breakfast and I got up at 8.  And this is a Sunday!!  Unheard for me .... new lifestyle starts here I guess.

He's had lots of little snoozes so far today and is eating but only about 3/4 ounce.  And boy does he get his nose into everything!!  We're just enjoying the garden and the lovely weather ... Andy goes back to work tomorrow so I'm on full-time mothering duty.

Am working on the photos - leave it with me!!!!   :D

Hi Jo, I only joined recently too.  It is friendly, isn't it?  You must have your Woody by now.  Hope it's going well!  We're getting an orange roan in 4 weeks as a brother for our golden, Danny.  Know what you mean about the excitement- i feel sick and it's putting me off my food!  Pathetic really, but I might lose a few extra pounds.
