Title: Lance the working cocker has been FOUND!!!!
Post by: joanne_v on October 27, 2009, 09:12:45 PM
Can anyone in the area please keep a look out for Lance, a black working cocker who went missing this evening in the area surrounding Braeside Avenue. He headed south towards the woods. He escaped from a car during a transport run so this area is not known to him. He is nervous and will not approach strangers.

Please PM me or call 07736834909 if you have information. He is wearing a collar with tag and is microchipped. He had a slip lead but has most likely got out of it.

Jo  :-\

OMG, this is just awful. After all he's been through. And what a miserable night. Hopefully he's stayed in the woods and kept dry, and even more hopefully he'll recognise Fiona's voice and his pal Duggie tomorrow.
Either that or maybe he'll appear back on Fiona's door step - you never know .............
Everything crossed.

He absolutely hates the rain, so he won't be running around near the roads, he will be hiding out somewhere keeping dry. Although, even better would be if someone has found him and taken him in overnight.

Possibly got some good news. The previous owner used to walk him in the woods in this area when visiting a friend so he may try and go to the friends house. She and the friend are out looking for him this morning so fingers crossed they have some luck.

Really want to get posters put up to spread the word. Crossposted to half a dozen forums too and a contact has emailed the whole vet school which iis closeby.

No news. Just heard from Nicola. Fiona and her have been out looking for the last few hours and there's no sign. Nobody has reported any sightings yet either.  :-\
Title: Re: Lance the working cocker is missing in Milngavie, Glasgow
Post by: Nicola on October 28, 2009, 04:04:04 PM
Nothing I'm afraid :-\   Fiona had already been walking around for ages when I got there and we re-did the woods and walked way up beyond them along some residential streets, through more parks and more woods around a lake and then all the way back. We stopped dog walkers etc. but nobody has seen anything. The thing with that area is that he could have gone in any one of doG knows how many directions, the woods have lots of paths leading in and out in all directions. There are several main roads nearby and on the other side of those more open ground and then it's just open countryside and the we went there are paths leading off in every direction as well so until there's a sighting of him so he can be pinpointed to a specific area it's a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack :-\
Title: Re: Lance the working cocker is missing in Milngavie, Glasgow
Post by: Rats and Dogs on October 28, 2009, 04:04:33 PM
I'm just back, I searched the whole of the woods where he was last seen, then when Nicola arrived we searched a lot of the surrounding area, asking people if they had seen him, but he could be anywhere. There are fields for miles, and it would have been impossible for us to cover the whole area. :-\

I might go back over in the morning and search Mugdock Country Park which is a couple of miles past the area, and has moors where dogs could easily get lost, but hopefully there will be at least one sighting by then.

If anyone else is willing to help, please let us know.

If he is not found by Saturday I will head over. Do we have posters up in the area? If not I will do some and post them all over the place. I'll also contact Stirling dog warden as I think this will be the neighbouring one if he wanders too far. I would then obviously be able to get him if they did get him.

Carolin, his former owner did some posters and put them up, although they say he is called Jasper on them, I think he would respond to either name. I think Doglost were doing some, but not sure how that works, who puts them up, etc.

The phone number for Radio Clyde 1 is 0141 565 2200, here's hoping something comes of it.

I could certainly go to the rescue centres, but I think because Lance is with SRS, the rescues will contact someone if he is handed in. Also, the police and dog wardens are aware of it. He's microchipped too, so he would be scanned if he was there, but I may give them a call in the morning and see if they have any other suggestions for what to do.

Jean1234's brother is going to try to get him a mention on local radio, as he works there, although they generally don't do that type of thing. I just wish someone would spot him somewhere and give us a lead. :-\

If we have no success before the weekend then I'll be going over for both days to search. an pick you up on the way Jenny if you are free. It highly unlikely we'll just happen to come across him so getting sightings of where he is are the most important thng just now. I've been bubbling away on and off all day. He was supposed to be coming to stay with my parents  :'(

I can't make it through to Glasgow again tomorrow as I have work to do plus a college essay due in on Friday which I need to tweak, tidy up and reference etc. but if he's not been found by Friday (although fingers crossed he will have been) I can head through again then, although without a sighting it's hard to know what to do as you just have to pick an area at random and he could be 10 miles away from there :-\

The poster is good, but he no longer has a tag on as his former owner took it off yesterday, he is still wearing a collar though. He also had a red slip lead on, and I looked everywhere for it, hoping to at least find that, but didn't.

It's so difficult to know where to actually search without a sighting, I noticed the woods are directly under a flight path, and when he was staying here he was scared of loud noises, so possibly would have gone further away from the area. The West Highland Way starts near there, so he really could be miles away by now. :-\

Just sent this to Clyde 1 - hope this may help:

My name is Kerry Smith and I am writing this on behalf of Lance - a working cocker spaniel that has been lost in the Glasgow area:

http://www.doglost.co.uk/PreviewTemplate.aspx?data=BR%2fw8oARY61CTi4XGBwEMrFqss3_3520g06

I live in London but am an active member on a cocker spaniel internet forum.

Lance is a very special rescue dog who needs to be found.......fast......

Many of us have posted his details on facebook and lots of twittering is going on at present about this very special man.

This really could become a huge rescue operation. Anything you could do would be excellent.

I really do hope you can help.

Kerry Smith

Keep looking at the satellite view on google maps and feling sick because there is just so much green space. The moors to the west just go on and on and on......  :'(

Not read the whole thread as to what you have done

But I have emailed Perth and Fife dog wardens so that if they hear anything - and the more areas that know can keep an eye and ear out

Hope he is found real soon  :luv:

well done to all that have been out and going out looking for him - sorry I can't do much else

No news from me, I'm afraid. I spent a while traipsing round the quiet areas of Mugdock Park, calling in vain. :'(  I didn't stay for as long as yesterday as I am just too unwell and exhausted, plus I had a doctor's appointment late afternoon.

I can't go out searching tomorrow as I have a meeting with work as regards whether I still have a job or not, then to the doc's for more blood tests.

Is anyone else going to be going out?
Title: Re: Lance the working cocker is missing in Milngavie, Glasgow

No news I'm afraid folks. A few people on the SRS forum have been busy postering and contacting more people. They've contacted lots of pubs and hostels used by walkers on the West Highland Way which starts in the moorland just to the west.

I'm wanting to set up a search team for the weekend so if anyone if free and able to help at anytime then please get in touch so we can all try and cover different areas. The best time to search in hope of a sighting are dusk and dawn but general searching and postering can be done anytime.

There was a lurcher who went missing in September last year from Kelvingrove, a little bit further into Glasgow. He was seen once or twice a week if that in various parks. In January, 4 months later he approached a dog walker for food and was caught (she knew who he was). He was happily reunited with his owner and has been fine every since. There is always reason to hope!

I'm investigating using humane live traps.....

I've noticed from the google maps that there's a quarry near to where he disappeared but I can't find any details about it

So sorry there's been no news :'(. Once again I will be free if anyone's passing by tomorrow - I feel so helpless :-\.

Will definitely be up for the weekend search x

I've done a Google search for farms round about the area and am contacting the farmers, in the hope that he may have turned up at one, and they haven't seen the posters, or have been too busy to do anything about him.

You never know. :dunno:

The Ramblers Association have walks going on every weekend. Shall I e-mail them? What is the best descriptive link to refer them to? (so they know what they're looking for.)

fantastic news -

hopefully one day we'll be able to fit their collars with a sat nav type device or some sort of GPS that means horrid and scary frights like this won't happen!!

Hope you are recovered also!!!

Lance is doing fine and is having a day or two to rest before moving to a foster home. He's slept most of the day so I guess he was a busy boy for 48 hours!

Such a relief. I too was rather emotional seeing the update - can't imagine how you were Jo/Fiona.
And typically it sounds like Lance was none the wiser.

I did suggest that a dog he knew would find him, though I reckoned that would be Duggie's destiny.

Divine intervention there I'd say! For his lead to get caught at the very spot/time when dogs he knew would be along-that could only be one wee soul that helped him-thanks Gari :luv: :luv:

I expected Duggie to find him, or him to come out of hiding when he saw Duggie. :D

His lead had caught between 2 paving slabs and he couldnt move so sat down and waited. It was at the very spot where dogs belonging to a friend of his previous owner stopped for a pee every night -and when they went out that eve there he was waiting! Now thats some coincidence!!  :luv:

He was rehomed about 6 weeks ago, but it didn't work out unfortunately. I'm sure there will be a perfect forever home found for him soon.
