Toilet training gone out of the window - help!
« on: July 06, 2014, 10:02:06 AM »
After being fully house trained for the last 6 weeks with no accidents inside, all of a sudden Isla has started weeing inside for some reason.  Last 2 times on her bed, which she has never done before.  Just can't understand why we have gone back a step.  I am wondering if because we thought she was past this stage we relaxed a bit and now she is out of routine.  The last time was really frustrating as we had just got in from a walk so I can't understand it.
We have gone back to basics so taking her out every 2 hours, lots of praise for going outside and treats.  Any thoughts or tips?

Sorry no advice but we are having the same thing with Sirius. It's really frustrating when you've just returned from a walk isn't it? I'm wondering if it's a stage they go through as both pups are similar age and have both seemed to get the hang of things.

Also this lovely weather has meant the door to garden has been open all day and so Sirius hasn't had to ask to go out. We are doing the same as you, back to basics every change of activity starts with a garden trip and loads of praise. Here's hoping they work it out again soon  :D

Isla's still young, so it's likely just a bit of a blip and a couple of days of back to basics will sort the problem out. But if you think she's peeing more often than usual, or looks like she needs to go urgently, she might have a urinary tract infection.

Hopefully both Isla and Sirius will be back to their usual standard of housetraining very soon :D

Thanks Sirius mum, good to know we are not the only ones.  Seems to be an over excitement thing/ phase.  She has just done it again, big walk, couple of wee's whilst out and then came home started scratching on her bed and then did a wee there.  Very frustrating as she has not done this before.  Just wish I knew why....

Good point about the UTI Elaine, May make an appt at the vet to treat her anyway as pretty hard to tell if it's an infection or behaviour thing.   At least that way we can rule it out, and focus on re toilet training.

Our monster will only go in our garden , we can be out for ages and she will come straight back in
and go out in the garden .

She also has a thing for carpet and her soft furry beds , we have solved 2 of the problems , plastic bed with a non
furry liner and i have taken the carpet up in our bedroom , that only leaves carpet on the landing and a baby gate
stops her getting to that .

When its raining we have to stand outside in garden as she has an aversion to rain , I now put the big parasol up
to keep a patch of the grass dry and that seems to be working .

This cute monster has taken over and although mostly good she is keeping us on our guard with the house training .

But must add , she is dry all night and when she is left home alone ( which is rarely , as we get the sad eyes ) she is also
dry .

I am sure little one is probably showing off for some reason and will settle again .

I'm sure they will get there but like all babies they learn different things at different times. Then they learn a new trick and forget the old ones. Sirius can jump on the sofa as of just now. He rather surprised himself when he ran in from the garden and found himself on the sofa.its been my sanctuary from those cockerdile teeth but no more :005:

I hadn't thought about UTI so Thankyou Elaine. I will be on the alert now. Like the idea of a parasol dry spot in the garden Frater .  :D

Most seem to go backwards before they go forwards ;)

Each of mine have done the same to a lesser or greater extent. Keep reinforcing going outside and she will crack it.

Phew reassuring as after a couple of good days recently it all went to pot yesterday. Still working on the basic garden trips. We'll get there eventually. I hope Isla making better progress  :D

Seem to have had a better day today.  Think it was all a cunning ploy to increase my stress levels as we seem to have had the blip the day before and whilst at the mother in laws.  One of said blips on her favourite rug :embarassed:
Still after a day of watching her like a hawk and lots of praise and treats I am pleased to say we have had a good day today.  Think like you it's back to basics and waiting in the garden.

Good norty's indeed  :005:
Last night also did some good nortyin - kept mummy out for 20 mins in the rain whilst doing a lot of sniffing but no weeing.  >:D
Still, so far carpets in tact.  For now.
Seems like most of my training is going out the window - lead walking practice today a disaster, only managed about 3 metres.  Two steps forward, one back.  How is Sirius doing today?

Been a good day. We went to our second puppy class and it was lots of fun although Sirius was the baby of our group and has so much to learn. We were in a fenced paddock with loads of space and were practising the all important meet and greet and sitting quietly as other dogs pass by. By the end if the session he was one very tired lad. We had a few minutes on our own with the trainer to help with our rather poor lead walking skills :shades:

In the afternoon we got good weather and did our favourite walk by a river where Sirius almost swims. It's very comical when he sits down in the river and then looks surprised that it's wet  :005:

The eVening was downhill we had three wees in the kitchen in an hour and half despite going out. I'm not sure how or why? Still going out every hour and he's sleeping now.  So it's an ongoing story here  :D

Glad to hear the carpets are safe well done Isla  :cool4:
