Progressive Retinal Atrophy
« on: February 04, 2017, 06:10:50 PM »
Hello, I've just joined because of searching through the web about PRA. My beautiful Lab Daisy-  just over 5 yrs old has just been diagnosed with it. She came as a rescue from Ireland and got to say I'm pretty cross that there is such laxness in spreading this - I think purely from the point of view of money changing hands. I'm pointing out the obvious I know. I'm just letting off a bit of steam.
Before I signed up to your site I spotted a posting by a lady who was asking if anyone was familiar with the use of something which comes from the US, a supplement called Ocu something- I've messaged the supplier in Ireland which she mentioned.
I can't find her posting now which is annoying because I wanted to catch up with her and ask whether she did get the product and whether she felt it had helped.
Has anyone else tried this supplement?
All best. Hope.

This is a link to another thread about PRA where the dog's owner started her on OCU glo, so it may be worth messaging the owner MollieMoo. She hasn't posted on here for a while or been on the forum for a couple of months but she may still receive personal messages posted on here.

We have Willow, just over three, and a few months ago whilst she was having an op for a corneal ulcer the vet saw what he thought might be the start of PRA. That just broke our hearts even though many people told us how well she would learn to cope with not being able to see.
Following advice from people on here we managed to take Willow to see an eye vet and he said that she has no signs of PRA, so we may be lucky but time will tell. Meanwhile I had been reading up about PRA on a  site  called ‘Dog Eye Problems in Cocker Spaniels - About Cocker Spaniels’, lots of information about the disease and a link to where Ocu-GLO can be purchased. It’s in America and very expensive for an antioxidant  though. You have probably found the site already but if not you may find it interesting.
Good luck to both you and Daisy

Dear Hope and Daisy
Whilst I cannot help you with the
ocu-glo conundrum I can tell you about our
journey so far with PRA... we are quite new to this..
Ellie was diagnosed last year after I became concerned
that her eyesight (which I always thought was poor) was
getting worse, sure enough after a trip to the opthalmic
vet we had a diagnosis of PRA ... like Daisy, Ellie is a "rescue"
(albeit from someone we know) her history is a bit sad as
she was born in a puppy farm in Wales and sold onto a
pet shop in Leeds.
However , I digress, I was heartbroken, my poor darling who
had already had a cr@p start in life is going blind.
Everthing I looked at both on here and elsewhere told
me "she will cope ok " , i really didn't find that at all
comforting at the time ...well, I bet you can guess what
I'm going to say.... she's managing fine...crashing into stuff,
still off lead in the park and generally a happy doggy,
she doesn't like the dark so I'm guessing she still has
some level of light/dark vision. We are on a journey to
who knows where but I'm not scared for her now Like
I was , we will cope with love and laughs along the way.
hugs to you
steffxxx
ps she still goes narrowboating with us and has a fine
time!

I think Just Food For Dogs has a service to customize food recipes. I use the Do It Yourself recipes, nutrition powder and omega oils from them.  My dog has done well on it. It is run by nutritionists and their customer service is top notch. They have a store, but also are online. Good luck and I'm very sorry about your dog.
