I agree with hoover in that there is a difference between authority and dominance and you don't have to sacrifice the former even if you don't agree with the latter. I think dogs learn respect through trust.

Hi everyone

Just wanted to update and say thanks for all the advice.

Also to say we have started 'dog school' with Dogs Trust and the advice has been really good so far. Week one was just 'parents' so take pup along next week. Having talked to the trainer I feel much better and clearer. I realise that pup, Cooper, is doing amazing for his age and my confidence is back! Despite him doing a disappearing act first week off lead...  :-\
