Hi everyone,

After much agonising, I have decided to have Otis castrated tomorrow.  He is 6 1/2 years old.

The reason for his castration is that he has been leaking som blood tinged fluid from his private parts.  It started 6 months ago, we checked urine, had an ultrasound scan and took urine from his bladder but no conclusion.  He was put on a two week course of antibiotics as well.

He has had a separate issue since January with limping, so he has been on Metacam on and off for 3-4 months due this period there has been no bleeding.  After just 3 weeks off Metacam, the blood returned.  It comes in episodes approx. 2-3 weeks apart.  I thought it was cysts but my Vet tells me that they did not detect any cysts on the ultrasound scan.  She has now advised that we castrate as this is usually the first method to provoke changes in that area.  I did consider chemical castration but decided in the end to go all the way.

As you might be able to tell, I am not a pro catration type of person and it pains me having to do this but I have to do something now......

So all the above aside, what about weight gain, personality etc.?  I just want my boy to be the same, but I am aware that many have weight problems.......
What happened to your 'babies' after castration, please?

How did you prevent them from licking/biting, how long did it take to recover etc.?  Otis is impossible with the lampshade collars....

I will have to deal with his coat change, I am also aware of that but I will deal with that when it comes.....

Most of my friends with dogs have had them castrated at a young age and just cannot see what all the fuss is about.  I just normally feel like the natural way is the best for the dig but I also know that there is an issue in that region and I do need to do something.
I have considered getting a referral to a specialist but I also see that castration is an option which is often used to see if the problem will sort itself out.

Please don't try to change my mind at this stage ;).........

Thanks from me and Otis xx

I won't try to change your mind, a) it is your decision and what you feel best for Otis and b) you have enough to think about without putting doubt in your mind  :luv:

:bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: for Otis and you

I didn't notice a particular weight gain problem in either of mine, once over the initial 'rest and recouperation' they still have as much exercise as before and you could always cut the food down if you feel he is getting a bit portly.
