Introducing Joey

Hi all,
I have been using this forum so much over the last few weeks in preparation for our new arrival! I'm sure I'll be continuing to use it as we time goes on.
So we pickedJoey up on Saturday- a beautiful, golden 8 week old pup. He seems to have settled in well so far- he is happy to go to his crate occasionally during the day although seems to prefer falling asleep on my feet or in his other bed, which by the way he loves to hump?! He has slept really well so far (touch wood) over night from around 10:30-6am in his crate in the kitchen without any crying (he has puppy pads in the crate). We've only had a few 'accidents' inside but I think he is starting to understand that he needs to do his business outside. He has a few half hours a day of madness where he enjoys chewing anything and everything including my toes, flip flops and remote control- he also loves destroying my plants in the garden! When he's not chewing or biting he gives lovely cuddles though.
So, so far, so good (mostly)! He is so cute and loves a tummy rub and I can't believe how attached to him we are already!
Any tips or advice on...
How to reduce his destruction of my plants...or is this unavoidable?
When is a good time to introduce him to his puppy collar and lead?
Any other tips or advice at this stage for an 8.5 week old pup?!

He sounds like normal cocker re the destruction 😊

You need a host site to add pics, search for
imgbb. Upload pic, copy the url then paste on post

Welcome to a world of fun!

Its great to hear that he is settling well and especially great to hear that he is sleeping well (mine was a nightmare sleeping).
Cockers are very intelligent so they seem to pick up house training relatively quickly.

Hope you have long years of fun together.

I would start getting him used to collar/harness and lead as soon as possible. There is a lot of debate on here about collar v harness which I would suggest you read at some point.

Hi and welcome to you and Joey - he's a gorgeous pup  :luv:!
Sounds like he's all there and behaving like a cocker puppy should!  ;)
I agree that its a good idea to introduce lead and collar/harness straight away, as you'll soon be aware, they do need a bit of encouragement to walk nicely on a lead ( :005:), so its a good idea to start early.
I ended up moving all  my houseplants into another room, Humphrey was either chewing leaves or burying his nose in the earth and throwing it everywhere and I was worried about him being poisoned. I eventually put them back when he was older, (by which time most of them had died anyway as I kept forgetting to water them!! 🙄)

He looks like a smashing little pup. If he grows into his big paws I see on the second photo, you will have a fine, strapping lad.

Thanks everybody for your kind comments! He is a darling apart from when he's tearing the garden apart- we have built him a big 'pen' now though as it was getting ridiculous!!
Quite a few people have commented on his big paws and suggested that me may be a big boy- his mum was quite small though and dad was only an inch taller so only time will tell I suppose!!
