« on: March 29, 2006, 04:02:44 PM »
The only one I am aware of I beleive is cooked chicken bones and duck bones - (and now maybe Iambs!!)
Also, what should be limited and what can be given freely?
Thanks

Things I was told not to feed dogs,(but stand to be corrected by those 'more in the know').Potatoes(dont know why exactly), mushrooms, tomatoes(confess to feeding a few cooked skins now and then), onion, chocolate or anything sweet, anything salty, cooked chicken bones, lamb shoulder bones or any cooked bones that could splinter e.g.thin ham bones and human biscuits!!!(My vet says one digestive to a cocker is the equivalent of a human eating a packet -  & OH wasn't listening to me >:( )

There was a list on here a few months back before we got Melody which I cut and pasted and saved onto my PC.  Its up on my fridge now and everyone who comes into contact with Melly has to abide by it.  Here it is:

Poisonous Foods for Dogs
•   Chocolate (contains Theobromine)
•   Onions & garlic
•   Pear pips, the kernels of plums, peaches and apricots, apple core pips (contain cyanogenic glycosides
•   resulting in cyanide poisoning)
•   Potato peelings and green looking potatoes
•   Rhubarb leaves
•   Moldy/spoiled foods
•   Macadamia Nuts/Walnuts
•   Alcohol
•   Yeast dough
•   Coffee grounds, beans & tea (caffeine)
•   Hops (used in home brewing)
•   Tomato leaves & stems (green parts)
•   Broccoli (in large amounts)
•   Raisins and grapes (damages the kidneys)
•   Cigarettes, tobacco, cigars
•   Nutmeg
•   Raw Potatoes
•   Turkey skin
•   Voltarin (in arthritis medication)-Very Fatal
•   Baby Food (can contain onion powder)
•   Citrus oil
•   Fat trimmings (Can cause pancreatitis).
•   Human vitamins containing iron (can damage the lining of the digestive system)
•   Large amounts of liver
•   Mushrooms
•   Raw fish

Help!  Do you know what are the issues with raw fish?  Raw sardines are much loved by Molly!

Great list - although likely to make me vary paranoid about what I drop on the floor whilst chopping...... :o
Dill always has our apple core, pips and all, and so did our last dog, who lived till she was 13.....
I know there are Barfers on here who feed raw fish, so surely that is not a problem??  Dill loves his raw sardines and pilchards.....

Defo not raw they are poisonous. Re cooked, I wish I knew. Suspect it may be a weight issue as it was mentioned by my vet at the same time as she spoke to OH about the biccies  ::)

Dill gets raw garlic to aid with the flea prevention....

If that list is anything to go by, Dill should have been dead by now - am getting seriously worried.....

Our Millie loves raw potato skin   :o

But we have never had a problem with her or my mums dogs (Cindy lived to 18)

We were having a conversation with our vet once and mentioned it and all he said was at least she was getting her veg.  Millie loves a new potato she plays with it, kills it then eats it!

Im concerned now but the small amount she does get i dont think is a problem.  im going to check with the vet again i think. :-\

Also although i have never fed any to either of my two, i thought garlic was good?

Soooooo confusing ::) :lol:

Don't know about raw fish I'm afraid but I'm sure someone will come along soon who does.  I sometimes give Melody a small roast potato if there's any leftover and she loves them

I think it might have been Lisa (silkstocking) who posted that list the first time round - maybe I'm wrong dunno, lol
and I think it was copied from somewhere else.
