Norton Security renewal
« on: January 03, 2007, 08:33:51 AM »
Has anyone renewed their Norton Security package lately?
I have had the whole Norton Internet Security package (2006) for a year now which I bought with my PC. My subscription for virus protection is now up for renewal.
Being pretty dim. Do I go for:

Norton Internet Security 2007 & Norton SystemWorks Basic Edition - Upgrade, Norton Internet Security 2007 Upgrade, or just the Norton Internet Security Subscription.
I want the best but if I buy the whole package again what happens to the old stuff on my PC? Won't I have used a lot of memory for stuff that is obsolete? I have read on COL that some people say it is a   >:D to uninstall and I really don't have time to mess about. I want the quickest and best option.

Also do I buy the download or buy the package? They are the same price. Does buying the package mean they physically send me the disks   :-\

I feel really stupid. Doh!

I don't use Norton but spent 2 hours last week removing it from my FIL's computer where it was causing all sorts of mayhem. You're right it is a  >:D to uninstall if you try and do it the usual way via Add/Remove programs but Norton have a handy uninstall utility you can download from their website which seems to get rid of most of it (even the badly corrupted files my FIL had). If you want to go for the cheap option, use this to get rid of Norton on your PC, then download one of the freebies like AVG or Avast ;).

Norton really is a pain, it slows your system down uses too many resources, it's a pain to uninstall too, thankfully I also found the handy uninstall program.

I now use AVG and have found it great, it updates itself daily, does a virus check daily without slowing my PC down

When we had our PC built last year we automatically installed Norton.  A few weeks ago we had a really nasty virus and not being at all technical we took it to the guy who built the PC to sort it.  I asked him if he'd mind removing Norton for us as we wanted to used AVG free download.  He is a master in the field of PC's, I've never seen so many PC's and related equipment in my life as he has in his house :o  Works on them all day in the police force and then builds/repairs PC's etc. in his free time.  He was totally of the opinion that Norton is a total waste of money and that AVG is by far the better option and he now uses nothing but AVG :shades:

So yes, in our case you're correct, we won't be using Norton again ;)

Why?

Symantec/McAfee and other companies that produce market leading products have a reputation to maintain and shareholders to keep happy - so they employ the best possible staff at leading market rates to ensure that they provide products that do the job and devote significant resources to developing and maintaining them - so the updates and patches for their products are available in the fastest time possible after a "new" virus is identified on the net  :-\

Companies like Grisoft, who offer their "basic" product for free - in the hope you will upgrade to a paid-for version once you have used it - do not invest as much money in the development of their "free" version. Also, limited functionality is one of its requirements of the "free" version, after all, how would they convince people to pay for an upgrade otherwise?

Personally, I are not prepared to risk our home PC network with a limited functionality (free) product that may or may not be the top priority for the Company which develops and maintains it - updates and patches are a critical part of the way in which the product works, and I want reassurance that they are on my computer as soon as possible and am prepared to pay for this service  ;)

I can understand your thinking Rachel.

But AVG offer a far superior service for free!

I've been using AVG for 4 years. The ONLY time I had a virus was when I thought I would give Avast a go and stupidly left my internet connection on whilst I turned AVG off  ::) As far as I am concerned and a few million other people can't be wrong....AVG rocks  :shades:
