chews for a fussy little madam?
« on: July 23, 2007, 02:23:36 PM »
Bella used to be a fan of hide chews but these days isn't really bothered. Zorro is 11 months and is needing to chew quite a lot to settle his big gnashers in, but if he has a chew and Bella doesn't, he spends most of the time guarding it and growling his silly head off if she, or the cats, dare to go anywhere near him. Sometimes it's not a problem as we just stick him in the kitchen on his own or send him out to the garden where he can grumble away to his heart's content. But sometimes in the evening we'd just like the pair of them to settle down with a chew - if they both have one then Zorro is really free and easy about Bella being near him. If it's just him who has one, then she's barely allowed to even come into the living room (despite the fact she's never ever tried to take a single thing off him, if anything it's been the other way around!).

So, I need ideas for things that Bella might like to chew. I've tried:

Stuffed hide bones (work for a very short period of time)
Various dried ears (Mada'am will not touch them with a barge pole so they all go to Zorro)
Dried oxtail (she loves it but it makes her very squitty)
Tripe sticks (very popular but only last 2 mins)
Paddywack (won't touch it)

Any other ideas? She does like those dried bits of deer innards from Zooplus but again they only last a couple of minutes, so I'm after a longer-lasting chew…

I've also tried giving her a frozen kong and him a yummy dried ear but then Prince Zorro is most unimpressed and won't touch the ear out of protest that Bella might be getting something better.

Not that they're uppity or anything  ::)

Beef jerky? Not sure how long that would last though.

Will she chew rope toys, Claire?

Molo has gone-off edible chews - but I can guarantee a quiet hour if I give him a cheap raggy - he slowly shreds it, so I do have to hoover afterwards to get rid of the threads of cotton  ::)

Bulls pizzles?  Coco loves these and they last quite a while too - bit stinky though but not as bad as tripe sticks.  >:(  I bought some at a show last year and they had them in 6, 12 and 18 inch sizes!!  :o  :005:

You should see the full size ones - they are 3 feet long  :005:

Molo used to love these - but has gone off them, too; I think he gets chewing experience he needs from the bones in his dinner  ;)

You can also soak these in stock, let it dry and then they 'taste' a whole lot better  :D
