Has anyone heard of this before?

Laney, as some of you are aware, has been mated :P

Season was perfectly 'normal', came in - bled, day 12 vulva soft, colour slightly lighter, flicking tail - lovely take to be mated have a good tie.
A couple of days after the mating she then started to bled again reasonably heavy.

Right , i know you will say that this is completely normal - Yep i know, i also know that it is not abnormal for the bitch to finish her season after being mated - She did this last time she was mated.

This is where i start to get confused - Laney is now 17 days into her pregnancy and she is still loosing colour was blood up to about 5 days ago, now redy brown.  She is bright, eating , not drinking to much, temp is normal.  WHY :?

Took her to work where one vet said wait until three weeks then pregnancy test her if neg then to x-ray to see if pos brewing a pyo :!:  :!:

Other vet said proberly aborting pups :(  :(  :(

Has anyone experienced this before :?:

I personally wouldn't be overly concerned as what you're describing is not that unusual - we have had bitches whose seasons dry up when mated & others who carry on bleeding (often a rusty brown colour towards the tail end of things) for quite some time afterwards The latter does not necessarily mean anything is wrong in my experience. We have had one bitch carry on slightly discharging for 3-4 weeks into her pregnancy - she had a normal healthy litter of 8. Our vet was not particularly worried or surprised by this as I remember. I think you just have to carry on keeping an eye on things as you are doing & try not to worry too much :) What pregnancy test can your vet do by the way? At 3 weeks, our vets will just check using their hands or offer an ultrasound scan at 4-5 weeks.

Jane

Thanks that helped alot, i'm just rushing into panic mode now.  would like to point out right now that i did warn you all

There is a new pregnancy test which is done via blood sample taken from 30 days upto about 50.  Works simular to a human test except that its blood not urine.

We have been using at work for a while now and have had a 100 % success rate.
Go to www.merial.co.uk  click on pet owners, then dogs, then products and it called relaxin, if you want more info

Oh yes, I do remember reading something about it now on another dog forum. I might enquire at our vets next time we go - dread to think how much they will charge though

Hi Torie, I'm afraid we all go into panic mode when a girl has been mated  Doesn't stop even when the babies have gone to their new homes :?
As Jane said probably nothing to worry about. These girls like to keep us on our toes...
One of my girls, Ringo's mother had almost no colour when she was mated, as soon as she was mated the colour was a very deep red   That continued till day 30 of her season. She went on to produce a healthy litter of 8 strapping puppies.
HTH.

Hi Torie,
I'd agree with Tracey too.  My Daisy continued to lose red blood for 2/3 weeks after being mated and she went on to have a healthy second litter of 7 puppies.  I was worried at the time as this didn't happen with the first litter!
I'm sure she will be alright.  Interested to hear of the pregnancy test so will check that out now.
