Which whistle is best??
« on: April 14, 2008, 09:26:30 PM »
I decided to get a whistle a short while ago as I was fed up shouting to Darcy (to no avail) and sounding like a fog horn. I initially bought a silent one and a normal one. I decided I prefered the quieter one and have been using the silent one for a couple of weeks now.

She is now starting to ignore that mostly and I find myself blowing it really hard and making myself breathless trying to make aloud noise with it (in the believe that if I can't hear it how can she...any excuse) :o which Im sure really is not the object :005:

Has anyone else got an opinion on which whistle is best??

If you are using it just for recall then it shouldn't matter which one you use. Are you sure she has learned what the whistle actually means?

It makes no difference which whistle you use, as long as you keep commands consistant. I use the same pitch whistle for all my dogs. For recall its 2 pips, for the stop command its one quiet long pip and that it really. Its getting them to obey the whistle thats another story, but will give you one tip, never carry out a whistle or any other command that you cant correct, and never give a command more than twice, it is very easy to train a dog to ignore commands given  :D

Do you mean as in how to blow the whistle or which commands to give. If it is which command to give, you decide  what you want the command to mean. there isnt a book giving you exact details but lots of gun dog training books and websites (will get the one I found for you) can aid you.

Id get yourself a whistle and give it a go. if you need any more info just shout  :D

We use 210 1\2 and use 2 toots for recall (this usually works well unless there is something smelly to roll in or something tasty to eat !! )  ::)

We have 210 1/2 as well (one each). I'm just retraining their recall a bit tbh as Bella was getting a bit lax with it lately. I do one pip to get them to change direction (not really a stop as such, I just do it instead of shouting "this way!" when they're heading off the wrong way), and 3 pips for recall.

I have an Acme 210 for my two.. 3 pips is our recall noise but I have walked with other people with different tone whistles and they recall to that too. From time to time I have to take some megga treats out to hot up their recall on the whistle, but on the whole it's much more effective than yelling  :005:

Suspect it's a lot better than a black one, on a manky piece of string... sporting some dodgy smeggy stuff  :005: :D
