No puppy yet!!

My dear old springer, Tango died of old age about 6 weeks ago. No I wouldn't have another dog, it would be much easier without one.lol                                                                                        I found myself looking at dog sites on the web and accosting every dog I met! So after serious consideration it's to be a cocker. I've been checking this site out and the photo's are wonderfull.
I've found a lovely breeder and her bitch is due to pup in about a week. A blue roan with a chocolate roan dad. I'll go and see them when they open their eyes. Any advice on which pup to pick would be great.
So untill I get my new baby I'll be haunting this site and drooling over the photos.

Chris - welcome to the board :D  So sorry to hear of your loss, but glad to see you have come to terms with what they bring to our lives and that you're looking for a cocker.

At two weeks old you won't be able to see which is the best pup, it's more likely to be around 6 - 8 weeks when their personality starts to come through. You want a pup that doesn't come charging to the front nor do you want one that stays behind - one that plays well with it's siblings and is happy to have a cuddle is likely to be a well balanced pup.

The one that comes to the front first can be a problem in that he is too sure of himself(or her of course;) ) one that hangs back might be a bit more nervy and have problems of that nature.

All that is only a rough rule of thumb and a guide and neither may end up to be true - there are soo many factors that influence how your pup will be not least the breeding. If you can see relatives and get a feel for their temperament - that will help.

From my experience, if your puppy is home reared, by that I mean raised in the house rather than in a kennel kept away from the family, then you are likely to have a better socialised puppy - especially to household noises and activity.

Good luck with your puppy - this is going to be such an exciting time for you.

Welcome to the board Chris  :D

I've got a springer and a cocker, so I can see why one breed led you to the other. Sorry to hear about your springer, but I'm sure your new cocker pup will bring you many years of laughter and happiness

Chris,

Welcome to COL!  I found this site invaluable when I was waiting to get my pup and learnt a lot of things that I am sure have helped since.  Sorry to hear about your Springer, we lost our 19 year old cat a few weeks after we got Riley and a pup certainly helps to take your mind off the sadness.  Enjoy COL, can't wait to see pics of your little one!

Thanks for the welcome. I have posted on another forum about buying a digital camera. Have to get one so I can post photos of my new baby. I'll let you know when the pups are born.
