PRA carrier, help!
« on: April 28, 2004, 12:21:14 AM »
hmmm I've been having a nosey into Indies pedigree the last couple of days, with it being her birthday and everything!

Trouble is i've come across something thats worrying me, although im not sure if I should be worried, does that make sence :?

Four generations back in her pedigree, theres a dog, that on the net says its a PRA carrier    I won't mention the name on here, incase I'm not supposed to, but can PM anyone with it, if they can help me! (Jane  )

Should I be worried about this atall?

I think that you don't have to worrie much, it's so many generations away. It's possible that your dog is getting it, but she has a very good option not to get it.

In the pedigree from our Joris are also pra carriers and affected dogs.  And guess what, he has not pra but he has Keraconjuctivitis sicca (drye eye). :?

I hope that your dog will be healthy.
Greetings,

Annemie and a big kiss from Joep, Joris and Henry

Hi Emma

You'd be lucky to find any particolour pedigree without at least one PRA carrier - most have more than one in the background (our dogs certainly do as do most other parti breeders) It's unlikely if these carriers are way back that there will be a problem although nobody can ever say this with a 100% certainty with PRA being a recessive condition. I think Indie also is related to an FN carrier through her sire but again that does not mean she is a carrier herself - it's just something to be aware of should you be thinking of breeding but as you aren't, it's nothing to worry about :)

He get's special eyedrops and it's going up and down, but he can live good with that disease. Over 2 weeks he has antother appointment with the eye specialist. Then he test his tears. he don't like his eye drops  :(  But I give after giving him the drops a treat and that he likes  :D

 I didn't know this atall!  Oh my goodness, does this mean Indie is more prone to this disease :?   What is FN exactly?, Is it life threatening and do I need to do anything about it?  Get her tested for it for instance?
Is it fairly common?  I just need to know she will be ok!  Sorry to bombard with all these questions, I'd look myself on the net, but I think I may end scaring myself    Is it her dad that has this?

Thanks

Sorry Emma - didn't meant to panic you  As I said, it's nothing to worry about - Indie does not have FN & you would only need to think about this if you wanted to breed from her (from the point of view of comparing pedigrees of stud dogs etc) There is some info on FN on the Cocker Club site at www.thecockerspanielclub.co.uk - it is a serious condition but thankfully much rarer now than it was say 20 years ago.
