« on: October 28, 2004, 10:27:46 AM »
Hello,

one of my friends feed her dog only vegetarian food these days which is specially fomulated for the dogs who suffer from allergy. :(

Her dog is allegic to all kinds of so-called complete food which contains meat.

she is worried if she is not providing enough protein to the dog. so I'm looking for a good protein supplement for her dog who suffers from allegy.

Does anybody have a recommendation?

If your friend is using a special vegetarian dog food, then there's no need to add extra protein as the food will contain everything a dog needs. Which food is it? There are several on the market over here, such as Yarrah Organic, Happidog & Wafcol Vegetarian. Vegetarian dog foods use soy as their protein source generally & have protein levels comparable to meat-based dog foods.

Thanks, Jane.

Unfortunately, the several food you mentioned are not for sale here in Korea.
I guess the importers usually import dog food from the U.S.A.

I'm not sure that you've heard of Three Dog Bakery in England. I heard it's quite famous in the states.

The branch store opened in Korea last year. they make all natural vegetarian food.

I just found their website and quoted ingredients.

INGREDIENTS:
Wheat flour, wheat germ meal, ground whole wheat, wheat gluten, canola oil, wheat bran, sunflower seeds, mineral supplements (tricalcium phosphate, potassium chloride, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, copper sulfate, manganese sulfate, potassium iodide, sodium selenite), rice gluten, flaxseed, L-lysine, vitamin supplements (choline chloride, vitamin E supplement, vitamin A supplement, ascorbic acid, niacin, D-calcium pantothenate, vitamin D3 supplement, riboflavin, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, vitamin B12 supplement), carrots, peas, natural vegetable extract (to maintain freshness).

GUARANTEED ANALYSIS:
Crude Protein (min) ..................... 22.0%
Crude Fat (min) .......................... 10.0%
Crude Fiber (max) ....................... 4.0%
Moisture (max) ........................... 10.0%
Calcium (min) ............................. 1.1%
Phosphorus (min) ........................ 0.9%
Vitamin E (min) ........................... 250 IU/kg
Vitamin C* (min) ......................... 30.0 mg/kg
Omega-6 Fatty Acids* (min).......... 4.0%
Omega-3 Fatty Acids* (min) ......... 0.70%

I guess 22% of Protein is enough for the dog. what's your opinion about this formula?

you can find more about this at three dog bakery

Haven't heard of this food Chris but 22% protein is perfectly ok for most adult dogs (the protein is coming from the sunflower & flax seeds). There is however a lot of wheat-based content & many "allergic" dogs are actually allergic to wheat gluten. I assume your friend's dog must be ok with these ingredients & must just be allergic to meat?

Would the dog also be allergic to fish as there are some good complete dog foods made with fish on the market as well
